The postcard belonged to Horace Samuel LONG 'Swag' No 437, 9th & 4th LH Regt AIF seated on the right. The original postcard stated on the rear that the other 2 were Ray Forrester from Gippsland seated and Bob Exon from down Ravenswood way. Ray is possibly Joseph Raymond Forrester No 608 2nd reinforcements 9th LHRegt who was later awarded an "MM". Bob is Rupert Exon No 408 9th LHRegt. Refer Refer Cat No 16P for Swag’s service details. ... . Photograph POSTCARD ...'Swag' nickname of Horace Samuel LONG who enlisted in the 9th Light Horse Regt No 437 on 17.9.1914 age 19 years. He transferred to the 4th L.H.Regt on 27.9.1916 and allotted No 437A. Promoted to Driver on 1.1.18, L/Cpl on 11.11.1918. During his service he was hospitalised 3 times with various illnesses. He was discharged from the AIF on 24.6.1919. His father and 2 brothers enlisted as well. Father, Benjamin Marshman No 97 Australian Remount Unit 1 Sqd 1. Benjamin Marshman 'Marsh' No 439 4th LHRegt. ... PHOTOGRAPH POSTCARD... PHOTOGRAPH POSTCARD ...There is an Alexis Harold Safstrom No 1723, 38th Batt 1st reinforcements then 59th Batt. He was WIA twice and discharged on 31.8.1919. There are two Woodheads with an initial L. This is possibly L.H.B Woodhead No 728, 8th Batt then late in the war 25th Batt. He was WIA twice coming home late 1918. The colour patch on the uniform is possibly 8th Batt. Safstrom was from Heathcote which fits in with the donor of the items Mrs May Burns. Woodhead was from Mildura. The only connection could be that they were both in England at the same time the card was written. He rose through the ranks from Pte to Captain by 15.3.17. He was WIA 3 times and hospitalised twice with illness. Awarded the Victoria Cross at Courtney's Post 19/20th May 1915. The Military Cross at Pozieres on 7.8.16 and a Bar to the Military Cross on 10.4.17 near Queant. He was discharged from the AIF on 10.1.20. This is a very brief history of "Jacka". The album was bought home from the Middle East by Eric Leslie Bugge. He enlisted No VX6316 on 13.11.1939 age 34 years. At discharge from the 2nd AIF on 2.1.46 he was a Pte in 2/4th Base Workshops. .1) On rear: 10 days furlough to England. I left the trenches on the 22nd Dec and arrived in England on the 27th and left again on the 6th Jan for the Somme. I had a Bon Time. This fits in with James Archibald TODD No 2418 AIF. By his records this was 1917 - 1918 leave. Refer Cat No 1340P for his service details. .2) On rear: France 2.6.18.
