The painting was bought from Cesare Vagarini by Herr Wennagel for "Weihnachten" 1941 (Christmas) for his wife Johanna (Hanno) Wennagel. It was their first Christmas in the Camp. Herr Wennagel made many of the frames for Vagarini's paintings.A large Eucalyptus Tree surrounded by four huts - one on the left, three to the right. Green grass between the huts. A sunflower is growing at the side of the front left hut and a woman wearing a white shirt and blue skirt is seen entering the hut. Two women, one in pink and one in yellow are standing on a pathway between the huts. Clothes hanging on a washing line can be seen behind the tree near the last hut on the right. The 22 copies of Brennessel were the property of Internee Brulle, who was repatriated to Britain during the War. The copies were given to Pastor Ewald Steiniger, Pastor at the Lutheran Trinity Church in Melbourne. Made by Hans Knorr, sculptor, ex Arandora Star and Dunera. He was interned in camp 1 Tatura Group and later in POW camp 13, when status for merchant seaman changed to POW. Hans was, postwar, well known sculptor of wood and metals in Victoria.Wood turned lamp stand and material shade with electrical cord and plug attached. Stand has circular base on 3 feet and coiled central stand. Booklet, Chronik der Deuchen Jnternierungslager in Australien, December 1940
The booklet prepared and printed by the German internees held in Camp 1, Tatura. The reproduction of the booklet was carried out on equipment in the office of the Camp Garrison, and copies of the booklet were made available to those internees within the camp and who were considered sympathetic to the German cause.The booklet tells the story of the internment of German Nationals in Australia from the German point of view. It also lists the names, internment number, dates of birth and capture, and the State where the capture took place. It also illustrate the fact that the Australian Authorities were willing to assist in the production of the booklet through the use of their office equipment.65 page booklet consisting of folded foolscap sheets with hand printed and printed material. -
