Pictured is Archimandrite, Daniel Maravelis with members of the Greek community in Mildura. He was born in Smyrna and was the Archimandrite of the Greek in Melbourne from 1915 to 1922. He presided over the official opening of the first IPS clubrooms located at Michael's Building, Cnr Elizabeth and Lonsdale Streets Melbourne on Sunday 23rd September 1917. From the outset the Ithacan Philanthropic held at least one family picnic a year. They either took place at a popular seaside locations or at popular picnic sites in the nearby hills around Melbourne. The first annual picnic was held in 1918. The Ithacan Greeks worked long hours in family food and restaurant businesses in Melbourne. On Sundays the shops were closed so it was seen as an opportunity to relax outdoors away from the city. View across the picturesque Ithacan village of Kioni taken by Thalia Paizis (Papadopoulos) when she returned to Greece in 1921. Thalia later returned to Australia where she married Anastasios Papadopoulos.Many Ithacans from the village of Kioni migrated to Australia and settled in Melbourne. This knitted layette including a bonnet, cardigan, and two booties was created by Mrs Lavinia Brown, a champion knitter who loved Churchill Island. Mrs Brown was born on 16 June 1913 in Regent, and she entered all of her knitting into the Royal Melbourne Show. Her daughter recalls that her knitting never won anything less than first prize, and was most often Champion. She remembers that once Mrs. Brown's work was disqualified as being 'machine knitted', and after an appeal in which she was required to knit a pattern in front of them, she was awarded the champion. Mrs Brown chose to use bicycle spokes with wax ends as she could not find needles small enough for use to make babies' clothing.Lavinia Brown loved Churchill Island, and this was donated by her daughter, A. Cattell. This photo has been in the Hegarty famly collection since the twenties. It shows a group of workers from the Cardbox Department of J Kitchen & Sons Pty Ltd, of Ingles Street, Port Melbourne. These workers made boxes for soap by hand, i.e. presentation boxes for Christmas gifts. There are three sets of sisters in this photo: Lily and Alma Eddy, who travelled from Coburg; Mabel and Florrie McPherson and Alice and Myrtle Mott, all of Cruikshank Street. Mrs Myrtle Mott Bennett of Box Hill, was able to identify Millie Robinson (front row, 2nd from left) of Graham Street, Alice Mott (back row, 3rd from left). She is 2nd from left in front row. After all these years, it was hard to remember who was who! Alice Mott started working at Kitchen's at 14 year old, and her younger sister Myrtle started there at 15 years, having worked for a year at Swallows. Myrtle was to spend 15 years there prior to her marriage in 1939, and received a gold watch for long service She feels that working at Kichens was a bit more prestigious than Swallows. The Maroondah System was first and foremost developed as a functional component of Melbourne's Water Supply System. In addition to functionality, the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) envisioned the Maroondah Reserve to be enjoyed aesthetically and recreationally by the public. This souvenir illustrates the realisation of the Maroondah System as a local recreational and tourist attraction in the early 20th century. The Maroondah Reserve gardens were landscaped with English-style ornamental stonework, exotic trees, flower beds and rose gardens. All features of the water supply system became widely celebrated as beauty spots that continue to be very popular to this day with tourists and locals alike. This souvenir is a product of that flourishing tourist trade. These water supply sites continue to enhance Melbourne’s charm and liveability and are now recognised as places of cultural and historic significance.This souvenir tea cup has been curated by Melbourne Water as it represents an important historical aspect of the organisation by demonstrating the popularity of its water asset sites as recreational places and tourist attractions, and although these sites are functional parts of the water supply system, they were also designed to be enjoyed by the public both aesthetically and recreationally.
