Photograph, W Edmends, Preparatory Class, Kew State [Primary School], 1925, 1925
This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.Class photo of the 42 children in prep class at Kew Primary School in 1925.Dorothy Rogers 1912. Photograph, Painting school sign, 1988
In 1988, the senior students at Bulla Primary School, under the supervision of their teacher undertook a community activity to paint a school sign that could be seen from a distance. They collected rocks that were lying across the exposed hillside above the school and arranged them into the word 'BULLA'. They then painted the rocks with white paint. Anyone approaching Bulla township from Sunbury would see the sign across the valley. The sign remained there for the following eight years but was dismantled when the school property was sold. The painted sign on the hillside became an important signpost for people travelling into the township as it was visible even from a low flying aircraft, which were either descending to land or had just taken off from the nearby airport.A non-digital coloured photograph of four children and an adult painting rocks on a hillside.bulla primary school, school painted sign, bulla township -

Photograph: Children at planting ceremony to commence Pine Plantation, Tarnagulla, June 1925
From tarnagulla.org by David Gordon: "The plantation is bounded by King, Gladstone and Welsh Streets and on the east by the drainage channel. It was planted up and opened in June 1925. It is located on the massive sand heap of R.W.Hammond's quartz crushing battery, and the plantation served to enhance the appearance of a large-scale mining precinct which was by 1925 seen as an eyesore from the bygone mining days". Photograph, Bulla Primary School, 1964
The school in the photograph is Bulla State School No. 46 and was originally known as the Government -funded Bulla Common School, built 1870 - 1871. With the passing of the Education Act in Victoria in 1873 it became known as Bulla State School No. 46. The original building comprised of a rectangular shaped bluestone building with a 3 roomed residence attached. As school enrolments began to increase in the district, a weatherboard classroom was added in 1881 and later extended in 1927 adjacent to the original building with a covered walkway between the two buildings. The modern portable classroom was added in the 1960s. Bulla Primary School closed in 1996 after much local controversy. The property is now privately owned. The photograph was taken in 1964.The bluestone section of the school with residence is one of very few remaining in the state and is of local heritage classification in the City of Hume.A non-digital coloured photograph of children in a school playground with the buildings visible in the background.bulla state school no. 46, school lane, bulla, education act 1873, common schools
