Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: BABY SHOES, Late 1800's
Clothing. Tiny kid(?) leather soles - just 11 cms long, with burgandy silk fabric uppers- having a centre front seam, and a centre back seam. These seams are machine stitched and then top stitched on both sides of the seam, with tiny machine stitches. A 'turn-back' of burgandy, fake-fur trims around the ankle high boots and two burgandy silk ribbon bows, fasten the boot at the outer ankle. Inners of the boots are lined with a canvas-like fabric. Soles appear to be a soft chamois type leather.costume, children's, baby shoes. -

Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: BLACK SKIRT/TULLE/ VELVET UNDER-SKIRT OR PETTICOAT, 1890's
Clothing. This petticoat is multi-layered with one layer of taffeta at the hemline, with black velvet, the top edge of which is scalloped-55 cms deep, and finished at the top edge - the scalloped edge, with a cotton braid 2mm deep. Two layers of tulle, over the taffeta, are gathered into a 1 cm wide waistband, which fastens with a metal hook, but no loop is visible. A 23 cm long plackett has a metal press-stud closure. Clothing - AILEEN AND JOHN ELLISON COLLECTION: WEDDING VEIL, 1949
Clothing. Tulle veil, with a scalloped edge, outlined with chain stitch silk embroidery. The four corners have elaborate silk, chain-stitch embroidery in a floral design. Petals of two large flowers in each corner are appliquéd silk, also outlined with the chain-stitch embroidery. From a photo supplied by the donor, it would appear that this veil was worn around the shoulders, and extending to the hipline. A very long veil was then worn over the top, and seems to be a similar length as the wedding gown train. (This veil is not in the donation to BHS).costume, female ceremonial, wedding veil -

Clothing - LADIES PINK CRUSHED VELVET LONG SLEEVED JACKET, 1950's
Clothing. High round neckline, full length, centre front opening - rounded at the lower edge, and trimmed with two velvet covered buttons, under which is a small metal hook and eye to fasten at the waistline. Sleeves are full length, and trimmed with two fabric covered 2.5 cm buttons at the top edge of a 9.5 cm opening - this may have been a turn-back cuff, or a peaked edge. Left turn back is badly worn. Clothing. A ''shirt-maker'' styled ladies long-sleeved dress, with 4 mm, red/navy striped fabric. The ''straight-through'' dress has a tie-belt, 2cm wide if desired. Long 3/4 set-in sleeves are gathered into a ''turn-back'' cuff 6.5 cms wide, and fastened by two x 1.5 cm covered buttons,and two false stitched button holes. Clothing, khaki coloured WW2 army uniform trousers. Side pockets lined with cream coloured cotton fabric. Front fly opening (27 cm) fastened with six 1.5 cm plastic brown buttons. Four 1.8 cm brown plastic buttons across outside on either side of the centre back of waist band, to fasten braces. Trousers belonged to John Kenneth Martin, padre in 2nd Australian Corps AIF. Beautiful black silk top hat, lined with a 6cm wide band of leather, cream silk, and cream fibre board, with the markings - Wallworth 270 Bourke Street, Melbourne. First Class Award Centennial International Exhibition, Melbourne, 1888-9. A signature on the headband reads Jn H Sargood. A small silk ribbon bow, possibly used to tighten the headband. Clothing. Women's black satin bonnet. Semi circular pin tucked band at the front (7 cm X 13 cm) wide. Back of the bonnet is trimmed with fine gathered silk with frilled edge (14 cm wide). Centre front of bonnet has a folded back frill of gathered finely pleated silk. Front corners have finely pleated silk fabric ties with frilled ends. (50 cm). Clothing. Deep cream silk (?) satin button-up boots/shoes. Immaculate, tiny stitching. Low, Louie shaped heel. Ankle high boots. Buttoning opening on the outside edge-eight scallops each finely bound and stitched. Each fastened by a tiny 8mm domed painted button, and an immaculate, stitched buttonhole. Sadly, the satin has split, on each opening panel. Some colouring has been chipped from the buttons. Organza is a thin, plain weave, sheer fabric traditionally made from silk. Many modern organzas are woven with synthetic filament fibres such as polyester or nylon. Silk organza is woven by a number of mills along the Yangtze River and in the province of Zhejiang in China. A coarser silk organza is woven in the Bangalore area of India. Deluxe silk organzas are woven in France and Italy. Organza is used for bridal wear and eveningwear. In the interiors market it is used for effects in bedrooms and between rooms.
