The bedspread and apron (NA2863) were owned by Maria Austin (born 25 August 1867 Buried at Box Hill Cemetery 15 November 1955)and used when she worked as a 'Nanny' in England. Many of the children she cared for kept in touch with her after she came to Australia with her family in 1914. They arrived on Show Day, 1914 on the last ship to leave England before the First World War was declared. She lived at 26 Nelson Road Box Hill now the site of the Box Hill R.S.L. Maria was born 25 August in 18?? and died in 1952 and is buried in the Box Hill Cemetery. This is the twenty-first key presented to Ronald Arthur Edwards in August 1935. The celebration, held at his parents home in Husband Road, Forest Hill, was attended by many well known local people who signed his birthday key. Ronald Edwards was the youngest child of Arthur and Martha Edwards. In 1929 aged 15 he contracted poliomyelitis and became an invalid. He died in 1955 at Forest Hill.This item is significant in the history of Forest Hill as all the attendees and Ronald Arthur Edwards are from the pioneering families of the area of the Shire of Nunawading.Large wooden plywood key made to celebrate the 21st birthday of Ronald Arthur Edwards in August 1935. Believed to have been owned originally by Alice and Arthur Fisher who had a 16 acre property in Mullum Mullum Road, Ringwood. The house was called Greenhill and was located at the highest point, now no. 28. They had a mixed farm including an orchard of fruit and nut trees, and a dairy cow. Alice milked the cow much to the amusement of her English family, who delighted in visiting. When the property was sold the butter churn went to Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. Arthur Lunt, donor has memories of its use in Red Hill, where his parents had a mixed farm. That property was sold c. 1950, and the butter Churn returned to the Ringwood Croydon area where it has remained unused for the last 65 years.|The butter churn has been in Croydon and Ringwood since 1952; it is typical of manually operated equipment in use on small properties 100 years ago.Cylindrical container, brown, mounted on board with handle underneath. To one side is a wooden handle and drive gears to spin cylinder. Cylinder has tight fitting lid and makers metal label on the side; opposite side has direction arrow embossed. Mounted on wooden base. Cream was put into churn, handle turned to spin drum until butter was produced. Photocopy of Luther College Year 10 History assignment which describes several war memorials and researches the story of Henry Ivanhoe (Ivan) Walker whose name is on the Mitcham and Box Hill War Memorials. He was killed by shellfire on the Western Front and his body never recovered. Copies of letters to and from his parents as they tried to find out information about his death are included.
