Document - ROBERTS' NUGGET 1931
Two page document, one typed, one handwritten. Extract from the Bendigo Advertiser, Monday 3 August, 1931. The Roberts' nugget was found in the Whipstick forest a short distance from the Crystal Reef, Neilborough by Leslie John Roberts. It was found 30 cm down in clay and weighed 70 ounces. Information display card regarding the 'Big' Deborah Gold Mine, located near the junction of Abel and Adam Street, Golden Square. Earliest work recorded 1860. Shaft 2076 feet. Operations suspended in 1952. Gold yield 51,935 ounces. Battery shed still on site containing a 5 head stamper which was originally a 20 head stamper. a. four page handwritten report on the Hercules Mine, half yearly reports 1936. Extract: Reef worked below the 1620 feet level has been opened up at 1,840 feet. Profit has been earned but values are now unprofitable. At the Stanfield shaft, erection of plan was completed and shaft sunk to 344 feet. X cuts put out at 230 and 310 feet. Document - ALBERT RICHARDSON COLLECTION: STRENGTH OF MINING ROPES, MINERS' CLOTHING
One page document 'Extract from Dickers Mining Record, Strength of ropes Vol.1, No. 5, March 1862, page 3, 'Square the circumference in inches, and multiply by 200. The product is the weight in pounds the rope will bear in safety' Also, 'A question of some importance to miners'. A co-operative company had agreed that every shareholder working in the mine of the Great Redan Extended Coy shall bring two suits of clothes before he be allowed to work in the mine and shall proceed to the shifting room allotted to him and then shall put on his working clothes and on leaving work shall proceed to the shanty, and there change his clothes, and permit the officer apointed by the company to search the clothes in which he shall have worked. Any person not complying with this rule shall have a man work in his place and such person shall not be allowed to go down below. The wages of the man shall be deducted from the dividends of the shareholder. When taken to court, his Honor ruled in favour of the company. Each party to pay his own costs. He said that all classes when going through the Custon's Houses had to submit for the general good. Inside front cover on an attached flimsy copy is a list of rules for the workshop drill implementation. e.g leader to make a note of nature of work performed at each drill, signed H.L. Wignall, Ambulance Officer. Book contains names of each person who attended a particular drill session, e.g 13.4.56, J. Smith, H. Latimer, N. Henderson, R. Walls, L. Document - ALBERT RICHARDSON COLLECTION: EARLY HISTORY OF THE BENDIGO GOLDFIELD
Typed foolscap two sided document with information about the early history of the Bendigo Goldfield. Topics include the first gold discovery, how gullies were worked, quartz reefing, gold cakes, hand dollies and Chilian mills. Some brief statistics of the Bendigo goldfield include the total gold yield of 17,370,561 ounces plus 5,000,000 oz sold outside Bendigo. The greatest depth reached by any mine in the State, 4,593 feet below surface, or 3,700 feet below sea-level, was attained by the Victoria Quartz Company. About 100 shafts exceed a depth of 1,000 feet, of which 40 are between 2,000 and 3,000 feet deep, fifteen are between 3,000 and 4,000 feet and two are over 4,000 feet.bendigo, mining, mines department -

Cohn's Cobbers miniature hat. Terra Cotta colour made of cardboard with elastic chin tie. Paper hat band with 'Cohns Cobbers' printed in red. Cohns Cobbers was a TV/radio Club 1960s - 1970s. Hat belonged to Beatrice Coughlin. Beatrice worked for Cohns in Bridge Street in the early sixties. It was found while clearing out Beat's place so she could go into a nursing home (Bethlehem) -

Five page handwritten and typed document with information about the Black Forest Gold Mine on the Hustler's line of reef. The Black Forest mine was situated one mile north of the Eaglehawk Post Office. To the west was the South New Moon on the Garden Gully line of reef and to the east was the Lightning Hill line of reef worked by open cutting to a depth of over 100 ft by Pascoe and Simonds. A party of Germans named 'Rothacker and Party', first worked the claim on the Black Forest mine approx 1860. Other mines worked on the Hustler's line north of the Black Forest were: Martha Company.
