Book - Leichhardt the Dauntless Explorer, Colin Roderick, 1988
Ludwig Leichhardt (1813 -1848) is known as one of the most individualistic of Australian explorers. This is the first substantial account of his life and work, based on his diaries, logs and field books. Leichhardt's accomplishments have been uncarefully handled by many researchers and much hearsay and supposition has marred the record of the explorer's life. Not assisting in these efforts is the fact that his journals and logbooks were all written in the Gothic form of the German language and have been largely indecipherable and, in places, open to misinterpretation. With the publication of this volume, the story has been set straight. Using unprecedented access to Leichhardt's writings, including his personal correspondence, the author throws new light upon the scandals and defamations which historians - many with vested interests - have heaped upon him. It also includes Leichhardt’s observations of Aboriginal culture round Durundur Station; references to meetings with groups by 1844-1845 expedition to Port Essington; predominantly friendly relations with tribes; instruction in bush foods and medicines; Koko-Pera attack; appendix includes table of Tribal areas traversed 1844-5.non-fictionLudwig Leichhardt (1813 -1848) is known as one of the most individualistic of Australian explorers. Book - Airmen I have Met - Their Stories, Derrick Rolland, 1999
This book includes biographies of 16 different airmen with whom the compiler has come in contact. They have had their own uniques experiences in aviation. 12 of them served in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). One of the aviators featured in this publication is Joe Drage, Born on 10 July 1931 in Walwa, Joseph Gordon (Joe) Drage operated a timber mill and earthmoving business, but his great passion was aviation. After obtaining his pilot’s licence at the age of 19, Mr. Drage set about buying vintage aircraft that he feared would be sold overseas. He bought his first aircraft, a Tiger Moth in 1965. In 1972 he established Drage Historical Aircraft Museum on about 60 ha of land in Wodonga, with 5 planes. Over time this grew to 21 planes which Joe maintained so that they were all in flying order. His museum was the location for several air shows which included fly-ins by members of the Antique Aeroplane Association. The land occupied by the Museum was compulsorily acquired by the Albury-Wodonga Development Corporation and Wangaratta council bought the aircraft collection for about $2 million. They opened Drage Airworld in 1984. The cost of maintaining the collection became too much for the council which closed it down in 2002. Joe Drage died on 9 August 2017.This publication has a hard cover with a dust jacket. Edmund Burke (Don Woodward Collection), Kramnick, Isaac, 1974
From back cover: Edmund Burke has long been recognized as the intellectual source of one of the modern world's most influential political ideologies: conservatism. Yet he took an uncompromising stand for the cause of the American colonies and championed the rights of persecuted Catholics in Ireland and England. In this volume, Isaac Kramnick explores the many sides of this fascinating political sceptic. This multifaceted portrait examines the skillful writings and speeches that catapulted Burke into the aristocratic political community. In addition, the comments of such men as Tom Paine and Samuel Johnson reflect the way Burke's contemporaries regarded the man who decried both the French Revolution and the rape of India by English adventurers. The commentaries by modern historians illustrate the profound impact of Burke's dynamic words and actions on his own time and country and the legacy he has left for the modern world. ------------ Burke was a Whig who served in the House of Commons.Political, social and biographical interest - United Kingdom.Book; 180 pages.
