Henry James (1860-1932) was an agent and auctioneer. Record secretary of the Snowy River Shipping company. Shire councillor. Foundation member of Butter Factory.Henry James was a prominent Orbost identity who was very much involved in the local community.Invitation to James, H. (Mr) to the opening of Federal Parliament by the Prime Minister Edmund Bartonon 9 May 1901. Framed in wood, white paper with print of the young queen on a horse holding court. Colour invitations shows a young woman with armour and sword dismounting from a white horse in front of an older woman who has a crown in front of her. Several other women look on. The room is hung with heraldic bunting and shields, including one of the Union Jack and one showing the Southern Cross. At its peak the Beech Forest railway employed more than 21 staff between Colac and Crowes. Gangers (men in charge of the track gangs) tended to be promoted into the Otways but many of their subordinate repairers were local recruits. A few of the men who worked in the original construction gangs of 1900-1902 remained and obtained positions in the track gangs along the line. The track was maintained by seven three-man gangs based at Colac, Barongarook, Gellibrand, Banool, Beech Forest (2), and Lavers Hill. However, track gangs lessened as the line shortened. This book was a text book used by Arthur Gregory, the test room technician at Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory in the 1930s. He tested the suppliers’ milk and cream for butterfat percentage in order to determine the payment to the suppliers. Arthur Gregory later became the manager of Jays Laundry in Fairy Street. In the 1930s Arthur Gregory boarded at 28 Spence Street in Warrnambool. This boarding house was run by May Taggart, the wife of Sam Taggart, a Warrnambool tailor. Les O’Callaghan was also a boarder there and it was through his contact with Arthur Gregory that he obtained the position of laboratory technician at the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. Les O’Callaghan remained for over 40 years at this factory (leased at that time by the Kraft company) and was very important in the development of laboratory techniques used in the dairy industry. The Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory was established at Allansford in 1888 and is still in production today, operated by the Canadian firm of Saputo. This book is of interest because of its connection to Arthur Gregory, a test room technican at the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory in the 1930s and to Les O’Callaghan, the Laboratory Manager and Microbiologist at Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory for more than 40 years. This is a hard cover book of 822 pages. It has a blue cover with gold lettering on the spine. It has 29 chapters, an appendix, a bibliography and an index. It has many black and white illustrations and drawings. The spine is slightly scuffed. Believed to have been owned originally by Alice and Arthur Fisher who had a 16 acre property in Mullum Mullum Road, Ringwood. The house was called Greenhill and was located at the highest point, now no. 28. They had a mixed farm including an orchard of fruit and nut trees, and a dairy cow. Alice milked the cow much to the amusement of her English family, who delighted in visiting. When the property was sold the butter churn went to Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. Arthur Lunt, donor has memories of its use in Red Hill, where his parents had a mixed farm. That property was sold c. 1950, and the butter Churn returned to the Ringwood Croydon area where it has remained unused for the last 65 years.|The butter churn has been in Croydon and Ringwood since 1952; it is typical of manually operated equipment in use on small properties 100 years ago.Cylindrical container, brown, mounted on board with handle underneath. To one side is a wooden handle and drive gears to spin cylinder. Cylinder has tight fitting lid and makers metal label on the side; opposite side has direction arrow embossed. Mounted on wooden base. Cream was put into churn, handle turned to spin drum until butter was produced. Legatees would organise collection of wood from the country and distribute it to widows in metropolitan Melbourne. Other slides show the cutting and loading of wood and delivery to widows in metropolitan Melbourne. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image the best available.A record of Legacy helping widows by sourcing, supplying and delivering firewood. This item was made by John Russell Senior, a blacksmith, wheelwright, farmer and later chairman of the Orbost Butter Factory, makers of Sunny South Butter (today part of Murray Goulburn Co Ltd). The buggy lifter was handed down to George Henry Russell (Doug), the second son between 1970 and 1973.Blacksmiths played an essential part in the regional parts of Victoria and were required to use their ingenuity and skills to design and make tools needed on local farms. This item is an example of a tool specifically designed for a horse-drawn wagon. Horse-drawn wagons are an important part of Australia’s agricultural history. Light buggies were popular with farmers for trips into town before the common use of motorised vehicles.A metal buggy wheel lifter. It has two hooks connected at the top by a bolt and a shackle. E. Swan (of Bairnsdale) purchased the Orbost Tank Factory from Mr E. F. Reynolds. Swan was a tinsmith, coppersmith, plumber, zinc and iron worker who specialised in repairing tanks. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. Bushfire behaviour is influenced by many factors including temperature, relative humidity (RH), forest type, fuel quantity and fuel dryness, topography and even slope. Wind has a dominant effect on the Rate of Spread (ROS), as well as fire size, shape and direction. Temperature and relative humidity have major impacts on fuel dryness and therefore upon the availability of fuel for combustion. A thermo-hygrograph measures and records both temperature and humidity. It produces a continuous record by drawing ink traces on a paper chart held in revolving cylinder. Humidity is measured by shortening or lengthening of a bundle of specially treated human hair. Temperature is measured by means of a laminated bi-metal strip of temperature-sensitive metals which bend differentially with temperature change. The recording drum is driven by clockwork which may be geared for rotation intervals of daily, weekly or monthly periods. This particular instrument is a seven-day recorder. Serial number 10186 which probably dates from about 1960. Terra cotta is the perfect medium to manufacture items for keeping foods and liquids cool.
