... history of warrnambool Spine: ‘War Memorials of Victoria’ R.S.L. Victorian Branch’ Front Cover: ‘War Memorials of Victoria, a Pictorial Record’ This is a hard cover book with a blue cover and gold printing on the spine. ...This book gives information on 1,100 War Memorials in Victoria. It was compiled by Bradley, Christey et al and produced for the Returned and Services League of Victoria. War Memorials were established in most settlements in Australia after World War One and added to after World War Two and succeeding conflicts. The number of War Memorials reflect the historical importance of Australia’s involvement in world wars and because of our distance from the battlefields they have become sacred places in Australia – de facto war cemeteries. The book includes information on the Warrnambool War Memorial and those in our area. This book is of interest as it gives details on War Memorials and includes all those in the Western District of Victoria. It will be useful to researchers of social and military history. This is a hard cover book with a blue cover and gold printing on the spine. The dust cover is dark blue with a colour sketch of the Portland War Memorial and white printing on the front cover and an outline of the map of Australia on the back cover. The book has 240 pages, black and white and colour illustrations, a Foreword, Dedication, Acknowledgements, Introduction, Contents, Bibliography and Index and information in alphabetical order of the War Memorials in Victoria. It has a white cover with black printing and reproductions of black and white works of art on the front and back covers. ...This booklet is a catalogue of most of the works of art that were displayed in an exhibition in the Warrnambool Art Gallery in 1994. It was described as ‘a celebration of artists committed to living and working in country Victoria’. It was intended to be the first of similar exhibitions and was initiated by the Warrnambool-based Cultural Association of the South Coast and Western Plains. The Warrnambool Art Gallery was officially opened in 1886 though the local Mechanics’ Institute and Museum had been collecting works of art before this date. When the Mechanics’ Institute building was taken over for Council use in 1963 the Art Gallery ceased to exist and the works put in storage. The Gallery re-opened in temporary premises in 1971 and the present Warrnambool Art Gallery, a memorial to Fletcher Jones, was opened in 1986 in Liebig Street. This is an interesting catalogue as it is one of the few examples we have of the work of the Cultural Association of the South Coast and Western Plains. ... history: In the Landscape Series of publications they often included Scott’s poetry in their "Landscape Edition," which featured steel engravings of the Scottish Highlands. This helped cement the romantic, misty image of Scotland in the public imagination. These editions were known for their elaborate gilt edges, embossed cloth or leather bindings, and "illuminated" title pages. Gall & Inglis specialised in mass-market distribution and because Gall & Inglis printed these in large quantities, they are not "rare" in the sense of a first edition, but they are highly prized as decorative antiques. Printed in 1985. Soft cover book. Front cover is dark fawn brown in color with three photographs inset. Title and author's name in white on front cover and spine. Shire of Marong crest on front cover. Contains map of the then Marong Shire. Covers the history ...Marong Shire (1864-1994), immediately west and north of Bendigo, was proclaimed on 23 December 1864. Its western boundary was the Loddon River and its eastern boundary enclosed Kangaroo Flat which after World War II had a population of about 1000 persons. By 1990 Kangaroo Flat had an estimated population of about 10,000, thus giving the shire a pronounced urban component. Accordingly, the shire was proclaimed a rural city on 1 October 1990. Marong shire had a mixture of agricultural districts, eucalypt forests and mining localities. There was gold mining at Maiden Gully, Wilson’s Reef near Marong, Neilborough and Sebastian. The mining borough of Raywood was united with the shire on 1 October 1915. Lockwood was the shire’s administrative centre until 1908, when the centre was transferred to Marong. Marong municipality was served by two railway lines from Bendigo: north-westerly to Bridgwater-on-Loddon (1876) and northerly to Raywood and Pyramid Hill (1882). The Calder and Loddon Valley highways run generally north-west through the former municipality, through undulating to flat terrain, suitable for cereal growing and grazing. South of the Calder Highway the land is undulating to gullied. At the far south-west the Laanecoorie Reservoir lies on the Loddon River. In 1994 Marong rural city, with an area of 1489 sq km, had about 9000 cattle, 240,000 sheep and lambs and 11,000 pigs. About 6800 tonnes of barley and 27,000 tonnes of wheat were harvested. On 7 April 1994, Marong rural city was united with Bendigo city, Eaglehawk borough and Huntly and Strathfieldsaye shires to form Greater Bendigo city."Moving Forward - Looking Back" by Ruth Hopkins. ... Printing...Architecture...Literature...Text...History...Stonnington contemporary art collection Angela Cavalieri Linocut Printing Architecture Literature Text History Migration Cultural identity Classics European Italian Building Narratives Angela Cavalieri ...Angela Cavalieri explores how architecture, language, and memory intertwine. In Building Narratives, the Melbourne artist uses large-scale printmaking to merge literary text with physical structures. Inspired by her Italian heritage and classical European buildings, Cavalieri treats words as literal building blocks. The hand-carved lettering loops and stacks to form rhythmic patterns. These shapes mimic the arches, columns, and facades of monumental ruins. By layering the narrative, she transforms writing into a physical, walk-through environment. The massive scale invites you to read the image as both a grand building and a poetic story. Through this fusion of word and form, Building Narratives investigates how history, migration, and cultural identity are built and preserved over time. stonnington contemporary art collection, angela cavalieri, linocut, printing, architecture, literature, text, history, migration, cultural identity, classics, european, italian -
