The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.The ‘Myrtle Park Estate’ was a subdivision bounded by Victoria Road (now Lansdowne Street), Buchanan Avenue and Dight Avenue. Other streets that were created by the subdivision included Eurolie Street, Boorahman Street and Moody Street (now Sylvan Street). The Estate took its name from Myrtle Park (later changed to Macleay Park), which had been created in 1923 by Camberwell Council. The Park adjoined the southeast corner of the new subdivision. The Estate included 74 regular allotments characterised by narrow frontages and long blocks. As a 13 year old David Staig was inspired by a person who designed and flew a wooden bi-plane. He went on to design and build his own. His contribution to aviation is explained in the manuscript. Street Scene - Wakeham Street and Seaby Street (Provincial Hotel) 1997 Provincial Hotel built in 1877 by Mr. Allingham who leased it to Mr. J. Reading. The licensee being held by T.S. Cranston. In 1965 Janet Hubbard worked on a children’s holiday farm called Ponyland in Osbourne Road, Christmas Hills. On this property was an old timber building with timber shingled roof, which had been a Cobb and Co staging post. Janet made a sketch of this building and also took a photo at the time. The property was owned at the time by a person named McLeod who later demolished the old building. Before these ledgers were used there had an increasing number of proprietary medicines appearing on an unregulated market, with many products regarded as ‘quack’ medicines with amazing therapeutic claims.State governments moved to control claims for these product sand the Commonwealth strengthened controls on imported biological products. This item reflects the history of pharmaceutical practices. Until the mid 1950s there was no government co-ordinated record-keeping of the sales of poisons. The photographs show the Butter Factory at Orbost in 1892 and 1906. The postcard is addressed to Miss N. Cameron C/- Mrs H. Nixon of Picnic Point Bairnsdale. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co. Ltd was registered on June 1st 1893 and was an important source of income to the Orbost district. The first shipment in about 1893 to England went rank and was only good for axle grease on wagons and carts.The milk was brought to the factory by horse and dray.Most people would take the whey home for their pigs,which were abundant on the farms in the Orbost district. Mr John Gilbert is the man second from the left in 1250.1.Postcards form a vital part of social and historical records for researchers. These cards are photographs of the Orbost Butter Factory. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co. Ltd was registered on June 1st 1893 and was an important source of income to the Orbost district. Framed and illuminated certificate of appreciation for 'Joseph Twohig' for his service with the Howard Smith Company. [Original held behind the print in the frame]. A chain surrounds the outer edge of the certificate. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents actions taken by the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee in their role overseeing the Tourist Area.A voters' roll listing all those eligible to vote for the Commercial Licensees Representative to the Falls Creek Area Management Committee. The information includes the Site number occupied, names and contact details, and in some cases the name of the person to cast the vote if there was more than one holder of the lease or licence.
