On the inside of the handle the number 264 is stamped and on the base very faintly the letters J F Y Co. The item has some rust and looks well used, but otherwise is in very good condition. William Rae (1823-1887) was born into a farming family in Scotland and came to Australia in i852. After coming to the Bendigo area, he established a puddling machine in American Gully. He then bought a claim on the Victoria reef and was quite successful. Subsequently he bought a steam engine and three batteries to begin crushing quartz. This was such a boon that he moved to a more convenient location in Happy Valley, where he set up a crushing battery with 35 heads.Sketch of a crushing works. Printed underneath is: Wm. This traditional wagga blanket was made by Mrs Eileen Pattle between 1942 and 1950. The wagga was used as everyday bedding, as Eileen and her husband had very few possessions. They boarded with a man who they called “Old Harry” in Footscray. Old Harry had recently lost his wife and looked after the young couple well. They could stay with him and use his house as their own, and all that Old Harry asked for in return was for Eileen to cook him one good meal a day. The blanket was given to Mrs Beverley (Bev) Maguire, the daughter of Eileen, when she and her husband went camping one winter. Her husband was a “mad” fisherman and on one trip on which Bev joined him, her father offered the couple his old tent, that had a wall missing, and the wagga. The wagga was much appreciated as when the couple woke in the countryside, it was freezing, and they could see snow through the missing tent wall. From then on, the tent and the wagga were theirs. The wagga saw many more camping trips until the arrival of Bev’s “lovely new lightweight and down filled sleeping bag”. The wagga was made with a “make do, waste not, want not” attitude. The wagga started as an army issued blanket. The front layer has clothing and panels of mismatched material which has been added to over time. This includes an overcoat, two knitted garments, a panel from a skirt, and a panel from Old Harry’s Trousers. It also includes a man’s sleeveless knitted vest, and a knitted pram blanket. This is all stitched together with string, and the odd button. Bev said she would love to unpick the quilt to see what else is hiding inside but has resisted the urge to do so. All these layers have made the blanket incredibly warm, and heavy. The wagga has been within Bev’s family since creation and comes into the National Wool Museum Collection after serving the family well. It was used to keep everyone warm when not camping over many a winter’s night. Beverley is now getting on in years and donated the Wagga to the National Wool Museum in 2021. Her family referred to the wagga as a “collection of rags”, indicating to her that they did not wish to inherit the blanket. The wagga started as an army issue blanket. It has been made by stitching the khaki army blanket onto a hessian rear. The front layer has clothing and panels of mismatched material. This includes an overcoat, two knitted garments, a panel from a skirt, and a panel from Old Harry’s Trousers. It also includes a man’s sleeveless knitted vest, and a knitted pram blanket. This is all stitched together with string, and the odd button. It is thought that other materials are hiding within the layers of this wagga, however, uncovering these layers would involve unpicking the quilt. The wagga is 1360 x 1880mm, sized to suit a double bed. It is a heavy blanket, originating from all its panels of mismatched reused clothing. The wagga is well worn but has lasted almost 80 years. The first Emerging Writers’ Festival was held at the Victoria Hotel in Little Collins Street in January, 2004. The inaugural festival developed out of Express Media's Make It Up zine fair. It brought together the offerings of 68 writers from across Australia in a two-day series of panels, readings, performances and workshops. Express Media ‘s Artistic Director Richard Watts was the driving force behind the ground breaking initiative that was to become the Emerging Writers’ Festival. It was clear to him through the success and the demand of the Make It Up zine fair, which had its origins in 2000, that writing and writers were in the process of radical change and needed a new environment to grow. In response, Express Media formed a partnership with the Victorian Writers’ Centre and held the first Emerging Writers’ Festival with the tagline, the best Australian writers you haven’t heard of yet. The beginnings were humble but the foundations strong. St Kilda was a popular destination for Melbourne cable trams. Demonstrates a toy cable tram set.Cable tram set made from wood and pressed metal. Grip car or dummy has remnants of paint (green and gold) on the sides, holes for wheels on the two wood blocks on the underside. Has an eye hook at one end and a hole for another at the other end. Seat made from timber with a steel wire or rod to represent a grip lever. Metal secured to wood base with nails. Has four metal Staunchions on either side. Trailer similar construction with sides stamped or cut from sheet steel with holes at either end for a eye or hook and wheels. Roof on both items has been pressed and assembled. The two cards of nibs are retail display cards of the dip pen nibs that William Mitchell Calligraphy produced, dating back to around the 1920’s, which was the time of the Great Exhibition in the UK. At that time dip pens with steel nibs were the main writing instruments. British Pens Ltd. had recently formed as a company and its subsidiaries included the the company William Mitchell, which is why British Pens Ltd. is named on the cards as well. One card (1) has the Round Hand nib, which is widely used today for calligraphy scripts. The other card (2) has the Script nib that has round upturned points for monocline or unshaded lettering that is also used for calligraphy. The nibs also have a detachable reservoir. The pen nibs are shaped to fit into a slot in the base of a wooden or Bakelite pen holder. The hole at the front of the nib is for collecting ink from a well, which is then stored in a reservoir at the back of the nib. The nibsare stamped with their nib size and Pedigree (what type of nib it is) and maker’s details. William Mitchell Calligraphy still makes these nibs today with a slightly difference finish. (ref: Sales and Marketing Director of William Mitchell Calligraphy in 2016). HISTORY of the Ink Pen Quills and ink were common writing tools until the early 19th century when the pen trade began mass producing steel nibs and pens. The steel nibs each have a hole in the middle that acts like a well for the ink. When the nib is dipped into the ink well the writer needs to ensure that it is dipped to only just past that well. India Ink was one of the most popular inks used with the nib pens, notable for its satin-like smooth flow. This ink is composed of a particularly fine carbon mixed with water; it can also be obtained as a dry stick that is then crushed and mixed with water as required. The Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham had the largest concentration of independent jewellers in Europe. Birmingham became the centre of the world’s pen trade for many years -, during the 1800’s over 100 factories, employing 1000s of skilled workers, manufactured the ‘Birmingham Pen’. The William Mitchell heritage in making pen nibs began whilst working with his brother John Mitchell in the early 1820s. Almost 100 years later William Mitchell merged with Hinks, Wells & Co, another pen manufacturer, to form British Pens, employing around 1000 people in the Bearwood Road area of Birmingham. The company consequently received visits from many notable Americans, including president Ulysses S Grant.
