Kew achieved independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860. As a new municipality, its first three leaders were designated as chairmen. On becoming a borough in 1863, its leaders were identified as mayors. The earliest photographs date from ca.1906, when the Town of Kew commissioned the noted local photographer Josiah E Barnes to produce standardised portraits of former mayors to be displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Town Hall. The collection also includes photographs by other well-known photographic studios such as Burlington Studios, Melba – Melbourne, Stuart Tompkins, Spencer Shier and Talma & Co. The majority of mounts identify the photographer. Eighty photographs are housed in their original frames.This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of Mayors and Town Clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew, for the period 1863 to 1969. The portraits were transferred by the City of Kew to the Kew Historical Society in March 1989. A Significance Assessment in 2018, funded by the National Library of Australia confirmed the historic, and often artistic significance of the series. Framed portrait of Cr. V. M. The statue is enclosed in a cyclone fence. Houses can be seen in the background. The memorial is situated in the center of Main Street. The memorial is a tribute to all who paid the supreme sacrifice and to all who served. The figure of the soldier was imported from Italy in 1922. The cost of the memorial was 643 pounds. The metal plate machine used plates that contained names, addresses and classifications of each State Electricity Commission of Victoria employee working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The plates were put through the machine onto pay envelopes. Chatham School, located in Weybridge Street Surrey Hills, was opened on 1 August 1927 following pressure from local residents as nearby schools (Balwyn, Mont Albert & Surrey Hills) were all over-crowded. This followed a surge in development following WW1. Land in surrounding streets was sub-divided. This included part of John Butler Maling (Jnr)'s small farm bounded by Banool Road, Wharton Road, Weybridge Street and Whitehorse Road. An area surrounding his home, 'The Willows' was retained and not sold until after he died in 1931. leased by Mr John Butler Maling in 1861. Three acres of his land were purchased by the Education Department. Some of the early students have referred to Chatham’s land as Mr Maling’s bull paddock. Some of the original yellow box trees remain on the property. The most significant of these is now called the Friendship Tree. On 1 August 1927 212 students were enrolled; Ralph Rae was one of these. The school was official opened on 15th February 1928. The school number is 4314. These three badges were issued as fund raisers on Children's Day in 1918,1919 and 1941. The Children's Flower day arose out of the League of Young Gardeners established in 1916 to assist the war effort by encouraging children to cultivate garden plots at home and at school. The Children's Flower Day included lectures and lessons at school related to garden cultivation.
