Document - General Clean-up Falls Creek Tourist Area
Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today. This item is significant because it documents actions taken by the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee in their role overseeing the Tourist Area.A circular outlining detailed instructions related to a cleanup of the Falls Creek Tourist Area. The cleanup resources and support from the Committee would continue as needed until 3rd February 1963.falls creek tourist area management committee, falls creek administration, falls creek accommodation, ski championships -

Book - Situation Skiing, Jean Claude Killy, Mike Halstead, 1978
Jean-Claude Killy is a French former World Cup alpine ski racer. He dominated the sport in the late 1960s, and was a triple Olympic champion, winning the three alpine events at the 1968 Winter Olympics, becoming the most successful athlete there. He also won the first two World Cup titles, in 1967 and 1968. In this publication he presents information on techniques to enable a skier to handle himself in all conditions and situations. He reveals the strategies he has applied to a wide variety of snow and terrain conditions. First, there's a quick review of basics: exercises for getting in and staying in shape; tips on skiing equipment; a summary of the fundamental elements for the intermediate skier. Then he explains situations, how to "think ahead" as you encounter steep slopes and moguls, gullies and glades, ice and hard-packed snow, and deep powder. He discusses high altitude skiing, tells how to ski glaciers and back-country trails, and even gives away know-how learned in his championship years of downhill, slalom, and giant slalom racing.A book of 203 pages including photographs and illustrations. Book - The World Atlas of Skiing, Stephen Pooley, 1990
Skiing is the most exhilarating and popular winter sport in the world. The number of skiers has expanded every year since the advent of cheaper travel in the 1960s and an increased affluence brought a new group of ski enthusiasts to the slopes. The professional sport has also expanded and attracts a very large television audience. The World Atlas of Skiing looks at over 50 of the most prestigious and beautiful ski resorts in the world. From the older and more established destinations, like St Moritz, Gstaad, Kitzbühel, and St Anton in the Alps, and the chic American resorts of Aspen, Vail and Jackson Hole, to the huge, new custom-built skiing areas such as the Trois Vallees and Val d'Isere in Europe and Taos and Ski the Summit in the U.S. The continuing expansion of the sport has meant that one can ski in most parts of the world from Scotland and Russia to Australia, New Zealand and India. Each resort is illustrated with specially commissioned artworks which show the runs - from the nursery slopes to the most demanding which only the most experienced skiers attempt - ski lifts, cable cars as well as other distinctive features, such as the langlauf routes. The history and events of international championships - Winter Olympics or World Cup - that have given particular character to the resort are described, as well as the skiing greats who have mastered them.A volume of 190 pages including a table of contents, index, photographs and maps describing popular ski resorts around the world. It is divided into sections of Europe, The Americas and The Rest of the World.non-fictionSkiing is the most exhilarating and popular winter sport in the world.
