James Massey Herbert was born in 1891 and died in 1971. He was the son of Lancelot Herbert and Martha Rawling. He was married to Alma Young and his sons were Graham and Eric Herbert. ( info. from John Phillips) This certificate was a letter of introduction to be used when James Massey Herbert travelled overseas. This certificate is not dated but most likely dates from 1920s when J M Herbert took a trip overseas. The Herbert family is/was a prominent Orbost family. They were some of the early settlers in the district. From the THE LAND ACT 1884.-REGULATIONS: "Any person duly licensed under section 93 of The Land Act 1884 to cut and take away any live or dead timber on Crown lands, and any person specially licensed in that behalf by the Governor in Council, may at all times enter upon the said land and therefrom cut and take away live or dead timber. "The Richardson family was one of the very early settler families to establish themselves in the Orbost district. Samuel Richardson was builder of the Paddle Steamer Curlip.A white paper licence certificate No. 182 made out to Samuel Richardson & Son for the purpose of a Saw Mill. "The theatre itself was located in a barn close to the village pond. Its location is indicated on the attached 1827 map of Hampton Wick and the Swan arrowed where tickets were to be had. The picture of Ye Swan around 1900 is probably not too dissimilar to how it would have looked in 1797. One of the regular patrons at the theatre is believed to have been William, Duke of Clarence (later King William IV, uncle of Queen Victoria). The Duke lived in Bushy House about a mile away from the village and was a known devotee of theatrical entertainments. The theatre had disappeared by 1865. It would have been a touring company who were playing on the night of 3 October 1797." ( information from Ray Elmitt, historian of Hampton Wick ) The doors were to be opened at 6 to begin precisely at 7 o'clock,. Boxes were 3 shillings, Pit seats were 2 shillings and seats in the gallery were 1 shilling. Tickets could be bought at the printing office in Kingston or from Mr Ansel of Adam and Eve in Kingston or from Mr Pattenden of the Swan in Hampton Wick. "First Love" is a 1795 sentimental comedy play by the British playwright Richard Cumberland. It was first performed at the Drury Lane Theatre in May 1795. Frederick Mowbray becomes the protector of Sabrina Rosny after her abandoment by Lord Sensitive. The Agreeable Surprise is a 1781 comic opera to music by Samuel Arnold and a libretto by John O'Keeffe. The work in two acts was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket (London), on 3 September 1781. It was one of the most performed works of its kind in London in the last quarter of the 18th century. In England the 18th century saw the flourishing of theatre as a popular pastime. Many theatres were enlarged and new playhouses built in London and the provinces. The white woman of Gippsland, or the captive woman of Gippsland, was supposedly a European woman rumoured to have been held against her will by Aboriginal people in the Gippsland region of Australia in the 1840s. Liam Patrick Davison (29 July 1957 – 17 July 2014) was an Australian novelist and reviewer. He was born in Melbourne, where, until 2007, he taught creative writing at the Chisholm Institute in Frankston. This book was produced by the Mallacoota and District Historical Society. The Society, founded in 1974, has a museum housed in a World War 2 Bunker in Mallacoota . The bunker was handed over to the Society by the R.S.L.A small 104 pp book titled Mallacoota Memories. On the front cover is a coloured photo of lakes and trees. The title is in red. The book contains early observations by J.[G] A. A mortise axe is a specialist axe designed for hewing sills and notches in joints. The axe has a long, narrow head, making it easier to work on large logs. The shape enables the user to hew a long way down into the notch, where otherwise a chisel would be used. This tool has one blade, which may be pushed, swung or struck with a mallet. This type of cast iron kettle was used by pioneer families, mainly rural in the early 1900's upon open fires. It provided a source of boiling water, in or mainly outside the kitchen of homesteads. Early homes often had an open fire containing a fountain, buckets and kettles that hung from a hook in the fireplace. These containers supplied hot water for cooking, washing and cups of tea. The fountain was placed on hob until needed and then hung over fire.This water fountain would have been used by early settlers in Orbost before the connection of electricity.A large cast iron water fountain. Both hands were in use and the operator did not have to bend his back to reach down to the crop. On farms scythes were sharpened on a sandstone wheel mounted on an axle with a crank handle on one side. This was hand powered and used with water. Scythes were not used as often on farms after the mechanisation of harvesting. They were still used for cutting awkward shaped small plots and for opening a path for the tractors. This book was won by Daisy Close, born in 1899, of Murrangowar. She was Ethel Pike's mother. Daisy Close married Ed Jensen. The Jensen family lived at Murrangowar in the 1890's. they were farmers and relatives still live in Orbost.This book, together with a writing box form part of the history of the Close family who were early settlers at Murrangowar in the late 19th century.A grey- covered hard back book with black and orange illustration. This item belonged to Daisy Close, born 1899, at Murrangowar. She was the mother of Ethel Pike. Daisy Close married Ed Jensen who lived at Murrangowar. The Jensens were farmers. The wristing set was probably used at home rather than at school.This book, together with a book awarded to Daisy Close form part of the history of the Close family who were early settlers at Murrangowar in the late 19th century.A black rectangular box -probably cardboard covered with leatherette. The top folds out and inside the box lid are pockets. In the main section is a compartment for an inkwell. The inkwell has a an ink bottle. This was dug up at the old station at Lochend owned by the Stirling family and abandoned in the early 1870's. James Stirling's son Thomas Telfer Stirling took up the Corringle Run stretching from Lake Tyers along the coast. The home was at the Old Station. When he moved to Bruthen, James Stirling took over the Corringle Station. He is buried in the Marlo cemetery. He built a bark hut on the bluff that had two rooms, bark walls, earthen floors and a shingle roof. By 1884, this structure had expanded to a 9 roomed accommodation house and in 1886 became the Marlo Hotel when a liquor license was granted. info. from Personalities and Stories of the Early Orbost District by Mary Gilbert. These drawings are by Hilda Kerr and are hand-drawn in Pencil. Hand drawn by Kerr, Hilda (nee Temple). Daughter of George Temple and Mary McAuslane of Castlemaine, Hilda married James Kerr in 1893 and lived at 'Lincluden', Raymond Street, Orbost. Her husband, Dr James Kerr, was a Scot who had come to Australia as a ship's doctor and practised in NSW before visiting Orbost on a government vaccination programme. He liked Orbost and returned there, its first doctor, until his death in 1928. Hilda was sometimes referred to as 'Mrs Dr Kerr.' She and her sisters Mabel Stewart Temple and Margaret Ferrie Temple were all talented writers and musicians. This item is associated with Hilda Kerr (Temple) a prominent resident of early Orbost. She and her sisters Mabel Stewart Temple and Margaret Ferrie Temple were all talented writers and musicians. These drawings are of historical significance in that they depict aspects of the settlement at Marlo, located at the mouth of the Snowy River. Donated by the Harry Cameron family, Harry's father, James Cameron, came to Bellagoogan on Majors Creek in 1882. Bellagoogan was on Majors Creek near Orbost and was the site of the first race course.
