Album - Photo Album, Newstar, 1960s to 1970's
Photographic album containing 39 Colour postcards of Melbourne trams. The album consists of 30 leaves of dark grey heavy paper with three creases on left hand side of sheet, bound into a heavy bluey grey folder, embossed in gold 'Scrap Book" and bound with bluey grey string with two holes. The cover has been embossed with a the blue grey in swirls. Inside of back cover is a white label, "A New Star Product", with a please ask for No. with "425" stamped on. Postcards have been glued into the album. Entries have been kept to a single line - cards are able to be dated from buildings, whether the trams have marker lights, types of motor cars and general Melbourne history. Image files in page number order. Image 15 is of book. All taken with a electronic camera. Page 1 - Night photo - Flinders and Swanston St. - with "Greetings from Huntingdale" embossed in gold. School children are boarding No. 41, which is inbound with the destination of Lydiard St. North. No. 42 is southbound, or outbound with a destination of Sebastopol. Richard Gilbert photo. Bromide made c1994 for possible publication, but not used, though may have been used in another publication. Print of the actual photograph added 27/1/2019 - see image i1. Richards notes that came with the photograph "Near the end of school term, students use the trams for the last few days of the closing school term. Mounted black and white photograph of 19 uniformed ESCo employees and two or three non-uniformed employees in front of the Australian Tramway Employees Association (Employees) Banner possibly at the time of a Union or Labor Day Parade, Ballarat. Photograph 145H x 189W. The banner contains a painted image of Prahran and Malvern Municipal Tramways, (PMTT) C class No. 30. Date - 1914? Image 1 of the photograph and part of the mounting. Mounting is an embossed cardboard with a raised border and different filigree on either side of the boarder. Cardboard has a light grey colour finish. On the bottom right hand side is the photographers name "T.C. Owen, 609 Sturt St. Ballarat". Image 2 - mounting and photograph showing general condition of the mounting. Pre printed certificate form "FMI 5-190 R2". Occupation given as "Driver/Conductor, Tramways" for the period from 19/9/1967 to 3/8/1971. Gave conduct and ability as "Satisfactory" and reason for leaving "Retrenchment". Issued on 5/8/1971 by Personnel Superintendent. Has D. J. Everett's signature on left hand margin. Photo of Ballarat tram 27, southbound at Grey St. loop waiting to cross a City bound tram car. Has one male passenger waiting to board the inbound tram and a conductor (in SEC hat) waiting to board the tram and act as the conductor back into the City. Trams between Bell St. and Sebastopol during the day, were driver only. Conductors changed trams at Bell St. or wherever they crossed one another on the single track. Tram has destination of "Sebastopol", and advertisements for "Twin Lakes" and Whitehorse whiskey. Note long grass on the left hand side of the photo. Another person standing by the doorway wearing a leather apron. Trams has destination of Grey St. Sebastl" Person looking into tram wearing the leather apron is probably the driver of the Fruit truck that collided with the tram. Published in the Courier on 3/9/1971. 2nd copy added 29/5/05 - in good condition. Hi Res version added 16-12-2015. Demonstrates a souvenir item for the opening of the electric tramways in Ballarat in the form of a postcard, one of which has actually been used to send a message. Has a strong association with the people who sent and received the card.608 - Postcard size Souvenir Tram ticket, printed using blue ink on one side with fare, photos of power station, engine room, boiler room and a tram & No.11162 stamped on edge. On reverse side is space for stamp, address etc., - with line & "postcard' etc., printed in red ink. Letter/note to Mino Loveday Hutchins c/o P.O> Queenscliff. No date. Fares given on card are : Mount Pleasant and Orphanage and Grenville St. 3d, or Grenville St. and Tram sheds 3d. Printed in a blue/grey ink of various shades onto a white card. Souvenir 608.1 - as above, numbered 11308, has been punched on lower edge near right hand corner. Has been used as post card to a person in Alexandria?, but rear has been eaten by silverfish or similar. Did have a date stamp of "28-8-0?" See also Reg Item 2488, page 28 for ticket number 1595. Both trams have White Horse Whiskey advertisements on the dash panels and No. 27, an Age newspaper advertisement as well. No. 27 has destination of Sebastopol and No. 30 - Lydiard St. Nth. Item 2488, page 54, of a group of ESCo workers, employees or a Social club function on a family day or a Picnic day at the Ballarat Showgrounds - has the grandstand in the background. Yields information about Ballarat's tramway system at the point where the tram services to and from Sebastopol often crossed each other and the nature of Albert St itself at the time.Black and White copy photograph taken by The Courier, photo not published of No. 42 and 41 crossing at the Grey St Loop, in Albert St (Sebastopol) crossover, looking south. No. 41 has the destination of Lydiard St Nth, while No. 41 is proceeding to Lydiard St Nth . Presumably photographed 30/9/1969, at the same time as Reg. Item 3753. Shows the Albert St road looking south with a milk bar on the opposite side of the road, two children adjacent to the tram and the nature of the road surface. Collected by Alan Bradley from the Ballarat Courier early 1980's. Has the Town Hall, Myers, Fletcher Jones, Coles, Ashley Chemist and Jeweller buildings in the photograph. No. 17 has a "Twin Lakes" advertisement on the front dash panel.
