Document - S.E.C. - Construction Envisaged May Exceed Cost Estimate, 10.04.1963
Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today. This item is significant because it documents the role played by the State Electricity Commission in the Falls Creek Tourist Area.A letter from the State Electricity Commission in response to Bob Hymans' hotel proposal. Their concern is that the construction of the hotel will exceed his estimated cost. He was therefore requested to attend a meeting on 30th April 1963 to discuss his proposition in greater detail.falls creek tourist area management committee, falls creek administration, bob hymans' hotel proposal -

A colour photograph of Darwin Street in Marysville in Victoria.A colour photograph of Darwin Street in Marysville in Victoria. Darwin Street was named after Charles Robert Darwin. Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist, geologist, and biologist, widely known for his contributions to evolutionary biology. His theory that all species of life have descended from a common ancestor is now generally accepted and considered a fundamental concept in science. In a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace, he introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Charles Darwin has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history and is buried in Westminster Abbey. charles robert darwin, darwin street, marysville, victoria, photograph -
