Set of documents associated with the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant that commenced operations in 1982 and ceased in 2018 due to dispute with Yarra Trams over the safety of the tramcars. It was a very popular operation. See reference for further details. Item 1 - notes the September 1984 Tourism Award, item 2 and 3 are promotional pamphlets. The Museum has other similar documents from different dates in its collection. Document - Specification, Melbourne Tramways Trust (MTT), Kew Horse Tramway - Contract No. 53, 1887
Provides a detailed specification of materials to be supplied and the works to be performed for the construction of the Kew Horse Tramway between Victoria Bridge and the Kew Cemetery. Has a schedule of rates. Details materials to be supplied by the contractor. Note it is headed "City of Melbourne Tramways". The Kew Horse Tramway was opened 28-12-1887. It was built by the Melbourne Tramways Trust and operated by the cable tram operator, Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. "Westinghouse Australia self-lapping driver's brake valve Type W" circular No. C6 dated 1936, describing the type of brake valve, its features, operations, adjustment, associated double check valve and drawings shown with parts. This type of valve was used by the MMTB, replacing the Manual Lap type on almost the entire fleet. The Johnson Fare Box Co. was a manufacturer of Fare Boxes that enabled the viewing as the coin was deposited and receipt of a fare from a passenger - see reference. The MMTB Footscray X1 class trams used fare boxes in 1926 and this may have been a sample coin to show how it worked. See item 7470 for an associated pamphlet that notes the use of Fare Boxes. Machine - Ultimate Ticket Machine - MMTB No. 9, Bell Punch Co, c1950
Manufactured by the Bell Punch Company Ltd of London as the "Ultimate Fare System", for issuing bus and tram tickets. Used by the MMTB for street sellers at Safety Zones in Melbourne. See items 7504 for a roll of 10c MMTB tickets and 7889 for a circular regarding their introduction in 1951. The machine was received from the donor with five rolls of NSW bus tickets - 3 Section, 25c, 45c, 60c and $1.00. Demonstrates a ticket machine used at Melbourne tram stops by "Safety Zone sellers".Complex apparatus consisting of metal parts, grey frame, levers, numbering counters, fitted with a cloth strap with clips and brown plastic backing. The photograph shows Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust tram 6 after using a crossover on Glenferrie Rd or High St, Malvern. The driver raises the trolley pole and is watched by a large crowd of spectators along both footpaths, many with bicycles. Central poles hold the tramway overhead and one carries a Hail Cars Here sign.
