When the Harcourt Valley was the subject of route selection /environmental effects survey in connection with the upgrade of the Calder Highway into Freeway the Harcourt Valley Heritage Committee enumerated and researched the unique collection of granite homes to be found in the valley. The publication gives a short account of the builders and illustrates the various techniques of building in stone. Advocacy by the Harcourt Valley Heritage Committee ensured the retention, in the face of demolition threat, of a unique collection of homes, many owner-built and of vernacular architecture. An account of the wartime experiences of Legatee Thomas White who served a term as President in 1925. This is the story of the capture and escape of Captain Thomas White, Australian Flying Corps on the Baghdad Road, Mesopotamia (Iraq), 13/11/1915. Captain White had been ordered to cut the telegraph wires behind the Turkish Lines along with his observer Captain F. Yeats-Brown from the 17th Indian Cavalry. Although they achieved their objective, the Maurice-Farman Longhorn aeroplane was damaged on landing and could not be repaired and were subsequently captured by the Arabs and local Gendarmerie. After the Arabs had beaten them up they were taken to Baghdad, escorted by the Turks and imprisoned. On 26 July 1918 Captain White escaped with Captain AJ Bott of the Royal Air Force. After making their way by sea (under very difficult circumstances) they arrived and went ashore at Odessa on the Black Sea. Odessa at the time was occupied by Austria and German troops and the Bolsheviks (the Russian revolution was under way). On 3 November 1918 they boarded a ship for Varna where Brigadier-General Ross met them, motored to Salonika, arriving 10/11/1918, then subsequently sent to Cairo. Tommy White became the third President of Melbourne Legacy in 1925-26 (Melbourne Legacy Bulletin 19/7/1990). He also went on to be the Australian High Commissioner in Britain until 1956. This memorandum is in relation to a review of the communications systems and procedures. There are two copies of the report and detailed phone charges from Telstra, the communications carrier. There were seven recommendations made. The Board of Legacy Melbourne concluded that the report was more a description of current practices and procedures and did not critically analyse actual expenditure over past years or the effectiveness or appropriateness of the current system. A first hand account written by Legatee Ashley Dore (VX 42841, 1918-1986) of the efforts of the Australian soldiers who elected not to surrender and who hid in the jungle intending to make their way to the coast and find a boat to New Guinea. Dore has written an engrossing account of the difficulties and privations they face, ultimately arriving in Pondo where they rejoined other troops under the command of Captain Appel who was able to get them to Rein Bay and finally Cairns. Dore had a civilian career with AMP in positions of increasing responsibility and became a Legatee on 9th September 1958. He was also Assistant District Commissioner in the Boy Scout Association. His financial acumen led to him becoming Honorary Treasurer of Melbourne Legacy after only three years of membership, and he was appointed President in 1965. Ill health curtailed his activities in 1970 and he died at the relatively early age of 67. A vivid account of the wartime experiences of a Melbourne Legacy President which exemplifies the type of person who was invited to become a Legatee. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. Photocopy of an article written by Ian Anderson (past president of Melbourne Legacy) for the Victorian Historical Magazine, 149th issue, August 1967, which was taken from his address to the Society on Tuesday 23 May 1967. It describes the founding of Legacy and the role of founding legatees. It summarises the work Legacy was doing with finding work for returned servicemen, and then focusing more on looking after the needs of war widows and their children. The magazine is available at the State Library of Victoria, Melbourne, but has not yet been digitised to read on line.
