The Methodist Home Missions was the department running the work of smaller churches and charitable institutions such as babies' homes, the Epworth Hospital, chaplaincies to hospitals and prisons, aged care homes, alcohol rehabilitation, local missions to depressed areas and the like. This was the home of the Offszanka family from 1913; they came to Surrey Hills from Richmond. Carl Theodore Offszanka (1874-1944) was a furrier. Both he and his wife Ida, nee Schade, (1882-1963) were born in Germany. They married in Victoria in 1908. Their home was called 'Westfalia' (ref: 1919 electoral roll), presumably after the region in NW Germany. They had at least 4 children: Carl Bernard - b 1909 Marie Eliese - b 1910 Erna Helena - b 1913; d 1996 - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. Bernard George - b 1914; d 1987 (Surrey Hills) - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. The family were associated with Our Holy Redeemer and also donated class photos of the school to the collection. Carl and Ida are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (RC 032-0034). The semi-circular bay window is not original to the house. This home has had a 2nd storey added to it in late 1990s. According to a family descendant (REF: Email 1/8/20 from grandson) Carl Theodor Offszanka purchased the home in 1913 for £616. He also purchased the adjoining vacant block of land at 42 Guildford Road and ran a large orchard on it before later selling it. This appears to have been between 1920-1930. The family continued to occupy the house until after 1980 when Erna Helena and Bernard George are listed in the electoral rolls. Our property register lists Erna Helena Offszanka as the last member there. She died on 5 May 1996. Members of the Offszanka family lived in this property from its beginnings for more than 70 years. Built as a home for Mrs Jessie Smith - it was later used as a billiard room and finally as the Penguin Cafe. Mrs Smith was a member of the 'Small' Family of San Remo. She was the only Estate Agent in Cowes until 1954. Mrs Smith was in her late nineties when she died in 1977.The Penguin Cafe was built as a home for Mrs Jessie Smith. Houghton in Princess Street Kew was an early Victorian cottage at one stage owned by a relative of the Beath family in nearby Ivy Grange. Their is a chapter on Houghton in Rogers, Dorothy (1961) Lovely Old Homes of Kew. Annie and William Booth, with their five children, left England to migrate to Australia in 1923. They came on the maiden of the S.S.Demosthenes. They bought and occupied land - six and half acres in Orchard Grove, Blackburn South - from 1923 to 1942 when the moved to Salisbury Street, Mont Albert.|William Booth obtained an office position with Danks where he remained till retirement.|The home in Orchard Grove was called 'Marple' after the place in England where the honeymooners.|They ran poultry and an orchard - apples, plums, quinces and peaches which were sold for additional income. One of a collection of 56 knitting pattern books donated by Mrs Hilma Carruthers. These books had been used by Mrs Carruthers, her mother and her two daughters. This medal was presented to the children of Victorian Wing - Warrant Officer and Non Commissioned Officers Academy Soldier who have served on operational deployments. As these young children endured an operational deployment of a parent who spent many months away from home in a foreign country representing the Australian Army. Following operations include Bougainville, East Timor, Indian Ocean, Solomon Islands, Meddle East Area, Afghanistan and Sinai.Presented by the Government to children whose parents had served overseas Silver medal with pale green, yellow, orange and deeper green ribbon. Nurse A. Watt was a registered Nurse who owned the Cheltenham Nursing Home, located up on the hill, at 200 Charman Road Cheltenham c1900. With Dr. Fleming Joyce, she brought many local identities into the world. Len Allnutt recalls that his brother, Ray, was born there in 1924. Nurse Watt had an excellent reputation for her care and ability in the local area. One recorded event was when in November 1910 Constable Edwards was shot by his son David, at his police house, after an episode of domestic violence involving Constable Edwards long suffering wife - the mother of David. Const. Edwards was first taken to the Police Station, but later taken by Shire ambulance to Nurse Watt's Cheltenham Nursing Home. At 8pm, Edwards was operated on by Dr. Joyce and Dr. Weigall. Despite the surgery, Edwards died the next day of haemorrhage and shock. David was convicted of manslaughter. Dr A Fleming Joyce was the Shire Medical Officer c1914 - 1930. Nurse Watt bequeathed her Estate to the Methodist Church. ( H. The McLeods, were the original holders of the Orbost station. Sir William Clarke bought the station from McLeod Bros. Sir William was a very fine man and noted for his philanthropic actions. He finally cut up and sold the Orbost station and presented 10 acres of land to the people of Orbost for a show and recreation ground. Sir William Clarke had taken over the Orbost run from the McLeods in 1870. (more info. July 2006 Newsletter) When Sir William died the property was owned by his son, Rupert who offered the land for sale at 4 pounds per acre. No sale resulted and the property was leased for a few years until in 1898 it was subdivided and sold to many of Orbost's first families.
