The first local government authority for Marong was the Marong Road District (an early form of single-purpose local government), which was proclaimed on 19 August 1860. Its boundary was altered twice in 1862 and on 12 December 1864 it was re designated as a shire. It absorbed Raywood Borough in 1915, and was proclaimed a Rural City in 1990. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. Tom Andrews, whose father (also called Tom) was thought to have come to Linton from Jamaica, lived near the Battery Dam. Little is known of his life, other than that he attended the Methodist Church and was "a very respected citizen". He is in a photograph of the Linton football team taken c.1915-1920. (Registration number 2019-247 - Mounted photograph 424.) Tom was a member of the Old Lintonians' Association and attended its reunions in the 1930s. He died at Bendigo in 1937, and is buried with other members of his family in Section 2 of the Linton cemetery. This piece is made of a stone called greenstone in New Zealand English, known as pounamu in Maori. Hei-tiki are considered taonga (treasures) by Maori. Stone carving of a Maori hai-tiki. The bosun’s chair is a typical piece of equipment included on board a vessel in the late 19th and early 20th century. The nautical word 'bosun' is an abbreviation of the word 'boatswain' who is the person responsible for the repair and maintenance of the vessel. It could be used when rigging the sails and for rescue at sea, along with a thick rope anchored on shore or a rope between ships. It could also be used to move passengers to and from a ship as well as cargo on, to and from the vessel. A bosun's chair is a simple piece of equipment made from a short plank of wood and a sturdy piece of rope. It looks a little like a child's swing but usually has a pulley system that allows the user to adjust the length of the hanging piece of rope, and in so-doing adjusts the height above the floor or ground or sea. In modern times a harness would also be worn by the bosun’s chair user for safety reasons. Bosun's chairs are also used by window cleaners, construction workers and painters. The bosun’s chair is sometimes just a short plank, or even a canvas sling. The bosun's chair is significant for its association with maritime equipment carried on board a vessel in the late 19th and early 20th century for maintenance and safety purposes. It was occasionally used to save lives. The bosun's chair is also significant as an early version of equipment still used today. Hand Operated Rail Saw Out on the track in the old days, it was sometimes required to cut a piece of railway track. Before the use of generators and oxy cutting, the only way to do this was with a hand saw. This is the machine operated by two people, that would cut a piece of rail in half. And when the rail was cut, it was usually required to join it to another rail which required putting in 4 to 6 holes in the rail with a Hand Operated drill. The sculpture has been roughly hewn from a single piece of wood.Mayday Hills Asylum was one of the three largest psychiatric hospitals in Victoria, and played an important role in the treatment of mental health illnesses from its establishment in 1867 to its closure in 1995. This piece was made in Japan and bears an export mark associated with Arnart Imports (N with a stylised crown). Arnart was an importer and distributor, rather than a manufacturer.Porcelain figurine of a male doctor holding a newborn baby. The doctor has brown hair and a moustache and is in surgical attire, with a white gown and white surgical hat. The cuffs of his blue trousers, and his brown shoes, are visible below the gown, and a blue jacket is visible through the gaps in the back of the gown. The doctor is holding the baby upside down by its legs, with his left hand around its calves, and is holding his right hand as if to tap the baby on the bottom. The figurine is standing on a white base decorated with green and black stripes, and is supported by a rectangular block which sits behind the figure. There is a gold coloured, floral decoration at the front of the base. There is a stamp on the underside of the base of the figurine consisting of the initial 'N' below a stylised crown. The number '3446/2' is handwritten on a sticker on the underside of the base. A second, oval shaped sticker is printed with the text 'Made in Japan'.

Has a strong association with tram crews, possibly inspector (Dave Kellett?) in Ballarat, would have been issued to crews in order operate the tram car doors. Normally a L shaped key.T shaped steel piece, with a round top piece or handle with a rod that has been forged at the lower end to give a tapered square shape for use possibly in external doors on SECV Ballarat Trams - known as a square key. This dress was worn by Julia Benjamin (1850-1927) for her marriage to Abraham Smith (of Polish descent) at the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in Bourke Street, Melbourne on 5 September 1868. Julia was the daughter of Joseph Benjamin and Hannah Soloman. Records suggest it may have been converted into her 'calling' gown for the three month 'bridal' period following her marriage. The gown would have been worn with accompanying accessories of a cape and gloves.An early example of a wedding dress of the Melbourne Jewish community.One piece floor length dress of (originally) lavender, watered (moiré) silk taffeta with short sleeves and train that is controlled by interior tapes to create bustle effect. The bodice fastens down the centre front to the waist where the opening below the waist is concealed by side pleats. The bodice appears to have originally featured a piece of lace at the neckline and a textile ruched belt.
