At our next society meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday 12th October we will look at the early history of some of the schools in the Eltham district. What were the driving forces behind the establishment of some of these schools and what challenges were encountered along the way? Gravel Hill Primary School (1566) opened in 1875 and succeeded Sandhurst Primary School (586). Situated in Mundy Street, it was designed by H R Bastow the Education Department's Chief Architect following a design competition in 1872. Kancoona School is at Kancoona/Running Creek which runs off the Kiewa Valley Highway. In the 1960s small communities had their own school.The students and families were part of the Kiewa Valley. The school in the photograph is Bulla State School No. 46 and was originally known as the Government -funded Bulla Common School, built 1870 - 1871. With the passing of the Education Act in Victoria in 1873 it became known as Bulla State School No. 46. The original building comprised of a rectangular shaped bluestone building with a 3 roomed residence attached. As school enrolments began to increase in the district, a weatherboard classroom was added in 1881 and later extended in 1927 adjacent to the original building with a covered walkway between the two buildings. The modern portable classroom was added in the 1960s. Bulla Primary School closed in 1996 after much local controversy. The property is now privately owned.
