Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from Wednesday, October 6, 2004. A full life: this photograph is of Annie Carr, born in 1849 in New Zealand. Her parents were William Carr, a blacksmith from London and Jane Jamieson of Kilbirnie, Scotland. She arrived in Sandhurst in June, 1854 with her parents and her sister Sarah. Sarah drowned in October 1854, in a waterhole at Maiden Gully. Annie married Louis Searle in 1871 and went on to have 14 children. Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Meeting venue: Temperance hall, View Street, circa 1900. For many years the temperance section of the community was housed in a small building in View Street, Sandhurst. The Temperance Society was formed in 1857 and the foundation stone for a new building was laid in 1895. The new building was designed and erected under the supervision of Mr. J. Blair at a cost of 1,500 pounds. The large hall was used for meeting purposes and the offices were leased out. Photograph - sepia. A portrait of Mr Arthur Simpson, Eaglehawk, Cordial Manufacturer. Arthur Simpson was born in 1862 in Sandhurst, died in 1921, aged 59 at Eaglehawk (Reg.No. 1388). Arthur's father was Alexander Simpson, mother was Jane Buswell. Arthur married Elizabeth (Amelia) Duncan in 1859 (Reg.No.3150). A child of theirs was Marjory Pearl, died 1978, aged 84 at Kyneton (Reg.No.11683) married Claude Francis Halsall in 1922. Document - ANCIENT ORDER OF FORESTERS NO 3770 COLLECTION: LETTER
Letter written on Bendigo United District paper with emblem in the top left corner and an impression stamp in the bottom left corner. The impression stamp is: Bendigo United District A.O.F. The emblem has a man on each side of a shield with a crown and a deer's head obove it. Below the shield is a sphere with four human forms floating around it. At one side is an archer and at the other side is a dragon. Beneath is Ancient Order of Foresters. Instituted from Time Immemorial.
