Allied military badges collected during the Great War 1914 to 1918 by Private (Shoeing Smith) John BLAIKIE 2341 who was born at Wangaratta. He was a Blacksmith and at the age of 42 enlisted on May 28 1915. He embarked on August 10 1915 and served with the 14th Battalion. He returned to Australia in January 1918 and discharged as medically unfit on April 10 1918. Inset photograph is of John BLAIKIELarge collection of allied military badges collected during the campaigns in France, Belgium and Egypt in 1916-17 by John BLAIKIE 2341. A Blacksmith who at the age of 42 years enlisted in the Army and served during the first world war. On his return to Australia he was discharged medically unfit due to rheumatism and senility. Manufactured in 1967 to commemorate the WW1 ANZAC Gallipoli Peninsular Campaign in 1915. Issued to recipient P. T. Bernard. For commemoration of service throughout the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915. Issued to P. T. Bernard.Cast in Bronze. 75mm high and 50mm wide. Obverse depicts Simpson and his donkey carrying a wounded soldier to safety. It is bordered on the lower half by a laurel wreath above the word ANZAC. Reverse shows a map of Australia and New Zealand superimposed by the Southern Cross. The lower half is bordered by the New Zealand Fern leaves. The name and initials of the recipient is engraved and the medallion is issued in a presentation box. Engraved for P. T. Bernard. WW1 Issue British War medal to all three services for overseas service throughout WW1 1914-1918. Medal belongs to Pte. A. E. Hollis, Chiltern Resident. WW1 1914-1918 The Great War. WW1 Campaign medal "British War Medal" cupro nickel plate. Silver in colour. The reverse has an image of St George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers, and a skull and cross-bones, the emblems of death. Above this is the risen sun of victory. The years 1914 and 1918 are contained on the outside edge medal. Ribbon The ribbon has a wide central watered stripe of orange, flanked by two narrow white stripes, which are in turn flanked by two black pin-stripes, further flanked by two outer stripes of blue. The colours have no particular significance. The medal is cupro-nickel with the effigy of George V on the obverse. The ribbon bar is worn on the left hand side above the breast and the colours of the ribbons affixed determine the campaigns served and or other military awards with approval to wear. Circa WW1 1914-1918. Gold coloured metal and brass ribbon plate for military uniform (no ribbons affixed). The back of the plate has two round lugs and an attachment slide through pin. The front top of the metal bar has a feather leaf type pattern affixed on top of where the ribbon mount would sit. The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. Part of a collection of photographs taken by unknown photographer serving with 8th Light Regiment in Middle East 1916 - 1918.The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The 8th Light Horse AIF was disbanded in 1919, but soon after re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria.
