"A map on the wall of his parent's shop in country Victoria is what got Frank Hutchinson interested in the geography and early settlement of Victoria. He later moved to Ballarat where he spent most of his working life. Whilst there his interest in the early explorers continued until about ten years ago he began to compile the listing which developed into the present publication." (ref.Port Phillip Pioneers Group) When he commenced the research and writing of Beginnings, it was not intended for publication. It was a project of personal interest. The Clunes Knitting Mill in Fraser Street, Clunes was the former Salvation Army Barracks which were moved from Bailey Street, Clunes to Fraser Street, Clunes by tractor in 1918. The Country Townspeople's League was founded in Clunes its mission was to campaign to decentralise industry and provide manufacturing and employment opportunities in country Victoria, specifically at that time, for the continued financial support of the Clunes Knitting Mills located in Fraser Street, Clunes, Victoria. A Bill to give effect to the proposed Clunes Country Industries Policy was to be introduced at the assembly of the new Victorian Parliament in around 1921. Mr Perkins joined the police force in his early twenties and apart from an 18-month posting in Melbourne, spent the rest of his career serving communities in country Victoria. He was a keen fisherman and hunter- his first love was sitting on the banks of the Murray River with a fishing rod in his hand. Family camping trips were spent by the river where everyone slept on stretchers with several army blankets underneath and a wheat bag wagga on top. The green colour of this wagga is from "Dekkol" a preservative which Mr Perkins used to protect his cotton fishing nets from rotting.Quilt made of two standard size jute wheat bags (a bushel = 150lbs) split and hand bound along seams.It is an example of the basic type of wagga made by shearers, farmers or swagmen. A regular event for the widows was the annual open air concert in the Fitzroy Gardens. This event was held on the 4th March 1990 and the 3rd Military District Band performed. The concert was held in March for many years. Over 600 ladies from metropolitan and country Victoria attended. The label says that the bandleader was Major Malcolm Bell and Donald Cant was the singer. Donald was a Lance Corporal and member of the 3rd Military Band but was on leave to be the understudy for Anthony Warlow in Phantom of the Opera. The photos show the widows sitting in the sunshine and enjoying the band. Photos were taken by Susie Howard, the publicity officer, and Legatee Melican. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991. This booklet is a catalogue of most of the works of art that were displayed in an exhibition in the Warrnambool Art Gallery in 1994. It was described as ‘a celebration of artists committed to living and working in country Victoria’. It was intended to be the first of similar exhibitions and was initiated by the Warrnambool-based Cultural Association of the South Coast and Western Plains. The Warrnambool Art Gallery was officially opened in 1886 though the local Mechanics’ Institute and Museum had been collecting works of art before this date. When the Mechanics’ Institute building was taken over for Council use in 1963 the Art Gallery ceased to exist and the works put in storage. The Gallery re-opened in temporary premises in 1971 and the present Warrnambool Art Gallery, a memorial to Fletcher Jones, was opened in 1986 in Liebig Street. This is an interesting catalogue as it is one of the few examples we have of the work of the Cultural Association of the South Coast and Western Plains. This Warrnambool-based group operated for a short time only in the 1990s.This is a soft cover booklet of 40 pages. It is bound with metal staples. It has a white cover with black printing and reproductions of black and white works of art on the front and back covers. Country Women's Association of Victoria was a popular, widely known organisation throughout Australia.Historical: Each town / area in the Kiewa Valley had an active CWA.Ceramic cream speckled plate with green insignia of the CWA in the centre. Insignia: Green circle, Victoria in gold at top in side circle beneath which is a green shield with CWA overlapping letters inside. The base is cream with an inside circle base allowing sides to slope upwards. Trudi HARLEY Born Korumburra, Victoria Born in country Victoria Trudi Harley graduated with a Bachelor of Education (Art and Craft) at Victoria College, Burwood. After teaching for 10 years in both Government and Independent schools in Melbourne she worked as a Sales Executive and Art Educator for Cavalier Art Supplies for 16 years. Recently Trudi Harley completed a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) (Honours) with Distinction between 2008 – 2009, and a Master of Arts (Research), Visual Art between 2010 – 2012 at the University of Ballarat (now Federation University). Maintaining an artistic practice while in a business partnership Trudi Harley owns and runs Atelier Art Supplies in Williamstown, Victoria, which is a major supporter of the arts in the western suburbs of Melbourne/ This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Artist's Statement: As an artist am continually drawn to ‘what makes us who we are’ and as a result the work, whatever it may be, is a reflection on what makes me who I am. In this I refer to perception, experience and memory as aspects that contribute to our sense of reality. By using these references I intend to engage the audience and develop a sense of connection and community through the visual image. ‘Fallen’ was not necessarily a reflection on my own life but of life in general as I recall at the time I had a family member who was struggling to cope with their own reality. I can also recall at the time reflecting on the adage ‘walk a mile in my shoes’ and the pressures we all face in life. Added to this were my own influences of upbringing, I have always been particularly drawn to fabrics and patterns as my mother was/is (getting a little old now) a seamstress and my father was a bit of a ‘perfectionist’. During my honours study I came across the term ‘Esperpento’ which included such visual elements as exaggeration and unusual viewpoints. Fallen was a comment on the psychology associated with expectations in life, or more importantly those expectations placed on offspring by their parents. This painting reflected the consequences of not living up to those expectations. It is unfortunate that in life, by the time you get to the point of realising that you have the opportunity to set your own standards, that you’ve probably embodied a great many set of values by osmosis and that you’ve now claimed them as your own. The view is from above to dramatize the subject, the figure placed compositionally in the top right hand corner to open up the picture plane and allow for the narrative to continue outside the visual area of the canvas. Photographs of Junior Legatees doing outdoor activities. Melbourne Legacy arranged many events for Junior Legatees to experience. One photo has 12 children on bicycles in a forest. Another has four children in kayaks playing and having a water fight with their paddles. Another photo has a young child with a supervisor getting ready for abseiling. Names are unknown. It was with a group of photos from the 1990's in a folio with paper labels. The article in The Answer explains it was a the annual two week summer camp for Junior Legatees. In 1995 it was held at Cave Hill Creek, near Beaufort and the nearby Mt Cole State Forest. The children were supervised by a team of 12 experienced leaders from the Melbourne Legacy Leadership group assisted by educational instructors. A total of 50 attended the camp (27 boys and 23 girls). Most came from Melbourne but some from country Victoria and 9 from South Australia. Motorola introduced the Bag Phone in 1988. These phones offered more durability and higher power output (up to 3 watts) than more conventional mobile phones of the time. Bag Phones were expensive to purchase and operate. They became available within the Department in the early 1990s but their use was very restricted to staff like fire communications duty officers. Senior regional managers also had bag phones. Bag Phones were also bulky and heavy and were often known as "The Brick". The 12 volt sealed lead-acid rechargeable battery provided up to 2.5 hours of talk time and 48 hours of standby time. They were replaced from the mid 1990s by smaller, analogue flip-phones with lighter Nicad batteries manufactured by companies like Nokia.
