The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. While most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women, there are a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. The headwear collection is particularly significant in that it includes the work of notable Australian and international milliners.Wide brimmed straw woman’s hat banded at the crown and on the rim with black ribbon. The girls' destination was Greece, to visit their parents' place of birth - a trip that many Australian-born of Greek parentage have made. They were on board the Ellinis which was part of the Chandris Shipping Line, a Greek shipping company founded in 1960 that plied between Greece and Australia during the 60s transporting migrants to Australia and returning to Europe with holiday makers. Dances were important social events which the Ithacan Philanthropic Society regularly held in the club rooms on Tuesday evenings. Picture dancing in the foreground are Poppy Kostos and Tony Servos.In the 1960s dances were held at the clubrooms on Tuesday evenings as the Victoria Market was closed on Wednesdays. The photograph was taken at the wedding of Poppy Lekatsas and Floros Demetriades at the 'Evangelismos' Greek Orthodox Church in East Melbourne on 19th April 1936. The photograph is an excellent image of the interior of the church at that time. Along with baptisms, the wedding ceremony (which also incorporates the betrothal) is a very important occasion within the Orthodox community. The service is rich with symbolism. The Evangelismos Greek Church is the oldest Greek church in Melbourne, established in the early 1900s. The house was the family home of Yiannis Kallinikos, who was the grandfather of Poppy Doubaris nee Kallinikos. It is in the village of Stavros the largest village in Northern Ithaca. The word Stavros means cross roads.'Patriko' is the Greek word used for family home. Many old family homes in Ithaca have fallen into disrepair and ruin as a result of families having left the island and with each successive generation ownership has become very complicated.
