Ballarat Old Cemetery was officially established in 1856, with a board of trustees. It had been opened by Ethersay and has burials relating back to 1848. The Rules and Regulations of this historic cemetery are dated 1854, two years prior to its official establishment. This map shows the early laid out streets and roads for the village of Darley and the main roads and streets in the central area of the township of Bacchus Marsh. The date of the map is not known. Landmarks indicated on the map including the Anglican Church in Church Street (Gisborne Road), opposite the Presbyterian Church, and the Baptist Church at its pre-1898 Main Street location suggest the map is dated between 1877 and 1897. SKI TICKETS Before tows and lifts were introduced at Falls Creek, it could take skiers 20 minutes to climb to the Summit … but only TWO minutes to go back to the bottom. The arrival of tows, then chairlifts and T-bars changed the face of skiing forever. The first rope tow was constructed by Toni St. Elmo for the 1951 winter season. Bob Hymans installed a smaller tow for his guests at Skyline Lodge. Tows were still quite slow, so in 1956 Bob Hymans created his single chairlift. In 1958 the Village rope tow, designed by Albury engineer Jock Wilson, opened. It was financed by shareholders including Bill Griffith (Bowna Ski Club) and the Bridgford family (St. Trinian’s Ski Club). Several other tows followed including the Summit T-bar in 1961, built by Ron McCallum and operated by Alpine Developments Pty. Ltd. which was a company formed by C. H. (Bill) Bridgford. By 1982 Falls Creek was served by 16 different lifts or T-bars, all owned and operated by Alpine Developments (Holdings) Pty. Ltd. During the development of Falls Creek, different methods have been used to pay for the use of tows, lifts and T-bars … including metal tokens, single tickets, strips of tickets and season passes. The Falls Creek Historical Society Collection includes many examples of these items.This ticket is significant because it represents a stage in the management at Falls Creek Tourist Village.Pass No 50397 for the 1977 Season. Ferdinand von Mueller was an examiner of botany at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) between 1880 and 1888. During that era he was active in donating related items to the School. When the Ballarat School of Mines Council agreed to introduce pharmacy and botany classes in 1879, it was apparent students would require access to botanical specimens in order to further their studies. Council members, who were inspired by the work of Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, authorised development of an area along the School's northern boundary, fronting Lydiard Street South, and oversaw the establishment of the new Botanical Gardens. Baron von Mueller took a practical role the development of SMB's Botanical Gardens from the beginning. He became a generous benefactor who 'donated collections of seeds and leguminous fodder plants, including valued grasses of interest and use to agriculturalists and graziers generally' to SMB over many years. The Ballarat School of Mines opened in the former Ballarat Circuit Court House in 1870. The court house was demolished in 1915 to make way for the Ballarat Technical Art School.
