ENIMATIC LAND OF BIRDS THAT SING FLOWERS FROMS SEEDS THAT SPRING OF REPTILES AND FISHES CREATURES FROM THE BEGINNING SUN AND MAN AND SCIENCE THE SYMBOLS THAT SILENTLY BUILD AND CHANGE IN COOL AND WARM YOU ARE THERE AND HERE OF YESTERDAY NOW THE SPLITTING EARTH MURAL BY JOHN GILBERT 1973John GILBERT (1935- ) Born Albury, New South Wales John Gilbert worked as a teacher while completing a Certificate of Art at the Technical College in Marlborough, before moving to Ballarat in 1958. He studied at the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines (1960-1961) receiving a Diploma of Art; and Croydon College of Art, London. Gilbert was a Senior Lecturer at the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (now Federation University) Art Department until his retirement in the late 1970s. In John Gilbert's Mount Helen studio he produced work marked with an incised 'Gilbert'. He had acquired a concern for form and an interest in sculpture from his teacher Neville Bunning, and from the British potter Hans Coper, whom he visited in 1968. He established two potteries in Ballarat , the Edinburgh Pottery (1972-2005) located within the Sovereign Hill precinct, and the Old Ballarat Pottery (1973-1994) located in the Old Ballarat Village opposite Sovereign Hill. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.A large ceramic mural by John Gilbert commissioned for the wall of the E.J. Barker Library. The mural features brown and green glaze with features of indigo. The work has no particular pictorial representation. It is an arrangement of colour and form, designed for enjoyment rather than to analyse. The theme relates to the development of the Universe through basic symbols such as plant forms, fish, birds and to mans development through symbols of science and engineering. The outer edge is symbolic of earths crust being peeled away to reveal science and nature. The mural depicts the changing of seasons from Winter to Summer (left to right). Neville BUNNING (1902-1990) Born Rockhampton Neville Bunning taught Sculpture and Ceramics at the Ballarat Technical Art School between 1945 and 1964. During that time he started the Ballarat Artists's Society, a group tat sponsored art and invited modernist artists to visit Ballarat to speak to students and the public. Bunning wrote a weekly rt column in 'The Courier' where his insightful comments made readers aware of significant trends in Art. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. David NEWBERRY (1925-2003) Born Eltham, Victoria David Newbury's painting career started with late 1950s abstraction. He worked for four decades, until 1997, when his final works were created on his last trip to Venice. Newberry was the son artist A.E. Newbury, and painting after World War 2 at RMIT, teaching there from 1955 - 1959,. He then taught at Bendigo Teachers College 1959 - 61 and Melbourne Teachers' College/Melbourne College of Advanced Education 1962 - 83. Among his students were Robert Jacks, Peter Smales and Gareth Sansom. ‘You must capture change. One day the landscape is violet, another it’s bluer or it has pinkness, its darker or lighter. This work was exhibited at 'Stories from Kitty's Lead Road' at Chiara Goya Gallery in 1999. Of the exhibition Ros Lawson explained: "Beyond the city, before the outback, lies a little-explored , unfashionable space - the "bushland" of suburbia. I explore this landscape of tension between nature and human settlement. It is the activities that occur within the lanscape that are of interest: animal husbandry, feral animals, nature walks, star gazing and more mythic qualities of the area. Within these themes lie the reflections of the artist I regard to the erfurbishment of the landscape and the desire to observe, classify and make significant in order to preserve nature."Rosalind LAWSON (11 January 1948 - ) Born Ballarat, Victoria Rosalind Lawson has spent much of her career working in rural environements, in Australia and Ireland. She has exhibited widely, and in 1997 won the Broken Hill Outback Art Prize. She holds a Master of Fine Art from R.M.I.T. (1995), a Diploma of Fine Art from R.M.I.T, A Diploma of Physical Education, from the University of Melbourne, and a Trained Teachers' Certificate from Melbourne Secondary Teachers' College . Between 1989 and 2012 Ros Lawson Lecturered in painting, drawing, papermaking, and was a tutor in Art History at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy (now Federation University). Frank Patrick Golding (1938 - ) This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007. Frank Golding is an author, researcher, historian, consultant: Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Federation University in Victoria, Australia. His formal qualifications are TPTC (Ballarat), BA (Melb), BEd (Melb), Dip MT (UNE), MA (Hons) (London). He has taught English and History in several schools. Frank Golding was employed as Principal at three schools including a multi-site English language centre for refugees and other new arrivals. Later he taught in and managed curriculum and equity programs in education departments and universities. Finally he is the author of 12 published books including a memoir, An Orphan’s Escape: Memories of a Lost Childhood (Lothian, 2005) which describes his childhood as a Ward of the State of Victoria in the ‘care’ of three foster mothers and three institutions. Golding lived in the Ballarat Orphanage from 1943 to 1953. It is his childhood experiences that underpin Golding's active involvement in ‘care’ leaver issues as an advocate and lobbyist. Heather SHIMMEN (1957- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria Heather Shimmen is a painter and printmaker who ises etching, lithographic and linocut techniques. She often uses mixed media and collage.
