Betts was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1840, immigrated to New York in 1861, and eventually settled in Chicago where he was in business for a short time before joining an Indiana regiment in the Union Army. When his enlistment was up, he went to Nebraska and studied for the ministry. George C. Betts was ordained in 1867. This British made type "N1087" and code "N1087" C Ericsson auto flameproof telephone was used in the drum filling platform of the Golden Fleece Depot, in Hovell St., Wodonga. The type "N1087" and code "N1087" C Ericsson flameproof telephone was introduced in 1937 and certified by the British Mines Department as flameproof for Petroleum and Acetone Vapours, in 1938. It was designed specifically for outdoor use in areas where there may be exposure to inflammable vapours and hazardous chemicals such as petroleum. Each contact or switch point is enclosed in its own flameproof chamber, to reduce the risk of ignition and the volume of gas.The Ericsson auto flameproof telephone has local significance due to its use in the Golden Fleece Depot in Wodonga, as well as national and international significance due to its date and the rarity and relatively complete condition.Black Ericsson auto flameproof rotary dial telephone secured in a hinged cast iron case painted black. There is no information in the Flight Log Book relating to his training and Service, however there is a parcel of personal letters, paper clippings, telegrams etc that would indicate that 416423 C C Gardner was in England during WW2, one letter advises of his Award of Distinguished Flying Cross. 403619 A Kennedy enlisted into the RAAF in 1941 and trained in Narrandera. Later in the Flight Log Book there are entries of him being at MacLeod, Alberta. At this point in time there is no other information on 403619 A Kennedy.These RAAF Flight Log Books are originals and belong to 4166423 C C Gardner DFC and 403619 A Kennedy, both served during WW2.Two x Flying Log Books, Form A18 (Revised April, 1937) (RAF Form 414). The letters of the completed banner were made by different churches within in the presbytery and spelled a sentence, presumably "BUILD YOUR CHURCH LORD!" Orbost was one of the churches that had the finished banner on display. One of 24 small banners with tabs at the top of each for hanging on a rod. 19 have large blue letters appliqued on them. Twenty two of the banners are roughly square and two are smaller and oblong. Three have no letters and are used as spacers in the four word sentence that the letters make.
