Postcard of “Eyrecourt” 1900s now 5 Scallan Street. Bill Kinsella's parents William Jennings Kinsella and wife Sarah nee Peardon lived there when first married in 1902 until they moved to farm in Ashens 1911. In 1919 the Chinese Herbalist Dr. Charles Lum lived at "Eyrecourt". It is not know who built the house or when it was demolished but the block was vacant in 1960's.B/W. Some of the people in the photo are said to be members of the Balmain family. James and his wife Amy Sophia (nee D' Alton) had three children. Amy died suddenly in 1902 at the age of 37. Early settlers had to clear the land of trees and shrubs to establish and maintain their farms and market gardens. Some settlers worked in the Gippsland region felling timber for transport by bullock wagons to Melbourne. Two-man crosscut saws were primarily important when human power was used. Such a saw would typically be 1 to 4 m (4 to 12 feet) long, and sometimes up to 5 m (16 feet), with a handle at each end. The technique in using a two-man saw involved a sawyer standing at each end and together the sawyers would alternate pulling the saw through the wood. A separator is a centrifugal device that separates milk into cream and skimmed milk. Separation was commonly performed on farms in the past where farmers milked a few cows, usually by hand, and separated by letting milk sit in a container until the cream floated to the top when it could be skimmed off by hand. Some of the skimmed milk was consumed while the rest was used to feed calves and pigs. Enough cream was saved to make butter, and the excess was sold.
