Work on paper - Etching, Graeme Drendel, 'Carriers' by Graeme Drendel
Graeme DRENDEL (02 July 1953- ) Born Ouyen, Victoria Graeme Drendel is a key Australian figurative painter and printmaker who is known for his 'enigmatic works depicting figures of solitude and introspection.' (Gavin Fry) His works are often set in isolated landscapes and situations, and his powerful images most often relate to the human condition. Becoming the first member of his family to undertake tertiary studies Graeme Drendel received a studentship to study Secondary Art and Craft Teaching. Country students could undertake their first two years study at Ballarat or Bendigo Art Schools. Graham studied at the Ballarat Teacher' College and Ballarat School of Mines in 1971 and 1972 before completing the course at Melbourne State College in 1974 While studying in Ballarat Graeme lived in the student departmental hostel 'Beaufort House, and had many formational experiences during his first foray outside of the Mallee. At Ballarat Graeme Drendel became aware of the painter Gareth Sanson who lectured at Ballarat Teachers' College. Although not directly taught by Sansom Graeme was drawn to the immediacy of his work. At Melbourne Graeme chose Printmaking as his major working with Printmaking lecturers Stephen Spurrier and Jim Taylor, and drawing with John Neeson. After teaching for several years, Graeme undertook a life changing and extensive travelling tour throughout Italy, United Kingdom and United States at which time he decided he would always depict the human figure. Recognised for his intelligent observations of the human condition, Graeme’s art invites contemplation and reveals the humour of everyday life. As a prolific user of sketchbooks Graeme Drendel records close observations, which often inform his paintings. Graeme Drendel is a regular finalist in the Archibald Portrait Prize, Sulman Prize, Paul Guest Prize, and in 2022 he won the prestigious Doug Moran National Portrait Prize with his portrait of fellow artist Lewis Miller. In 2021 he received a Federation University Distinguished Alumni Award. This work is one of a substantial body of limited edition prints donated by the artist to Federation University in 2022 covering work from Graeme Drendel's earliest years as a student, through to more recent etchings. Sawtron Portable radio KG109
After the 1939 bushfires, the Forests Commission Victoria invested heavily in a radically new communications network. After suffering some inevitable delays due to the war, radio VL3AA switched into full operation in October 1945 proudly beaming out 200 watts across the State. But by today’s standards, the technology was primitive and the reception poor unless the user was on a high point somewhere. The radio signal was "line-of-sight" and bounced between fire towers and relay transmitters across the mountains back to the District offices. The advent of solid-state electronics in the 1960s replaced the more delicate valve sets which enabled greater use of vehicle mounted radios. The Commission continued to research, develop and build new radios at its many workshops around Victoria. The network was supported by a large team of skilled radio technicians. The more secure and versatile State Mobile Radio (SMR) digital trunk system came into operation in about 1995. Upgraded Tait Radios were purchased in 2014 after recommendations of the 2009 Bushfires Royal Commission. But it was the convergence of separate technologies such as 5G mobile phones, high-capacity and light-weight lithium batteries, Wi-Fi, the ever-expanding internet, cloud data storage, digital cameras, GPS, personal organisers and hundreds of supporting Apps into powerful smartphones and tablets which revolutionised bushfire communications from the mid-2000s. Slide, Toys, 1963
Colour slide of large number of toys collected for distribution and a legatee thanking a schoolgirl. There were wooden rocking horses and planes. Also soft toys such as Humpty Dumpty, teddies and koalas. The toys were part of an arrangement with the Department of Education. Schools would produce the toys, often in wood work classes and they were donated to Legacy and Carry On. The toys were given to Junior Legatees at the Government House Christmas Party. Excess toys were passed to a dozen additional charities. The scheme started in 1949 and by 1962 over 8,200 toys were donated, from 201 schools. The total to that date was over 72,500 toys. It appears to be 1963 as there was space for the tally to be completed. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. Sculpture, Statue in bronze of Neville Howse VC, 2000
This small bronze statute depicts Neville Howse rescuing a soldier from the battlefield during the Boer War. In 1900 while accompanying a group of infantry at Vredefort, Howse noticed a British trumpeter fall. As the soldier lay injured under heavy fire, the surgeon galloped to his rescue. His horse was horse shot dead from under him but undeterred, he continued on foot until he reached the man. The soldier had been shot through the bladder so Howse dressed his wounds and carried him to safety. For this brave action, Howse was awarded the Victoria Cross, the first medical person to achieve this honour. The son of a doctor who served in the Crimean war, Neville Howse (1863-1930) was born in Somerset, England. He migrated to Australia and set up medical practice in Newcastle and later, in Taree, NSW. Upon deciding to become a surgeon, he returned to the UK to undertake Fellowship of the Royal College before travelling back to NSW in 1899. In the same year Great Britain went to war with the two Boer Republics of South Africa and Howse volunteered for service. Equipment - Object, American Foundation for the Blind, Tellatouch
The Tellatouch was developed in the American Foundation research laboratory and resulted from one of the first AFB research projects, a major effort in the mid-1940s to help deaf-blind people. The device helped end social isolation for hundreds of deaf-blind children and adults. The Tellatouch provides a means of communication between a sighted (or blind) person and a deaf-blind person who can read braille. The keyboard has three rows of ten keys each and a standard braille keyboard on the fourth row. At the rear of the machine is a round metal plate with the braille cell in the center. The deaf-blind person rests a finger on the braille cell. Pins rise to form the equivalent of the letter key that is struck. The body of the device covered in beige vinyl, with a hinged lid at the front which lifts up to reveal the keyboard. The lid is secured with a metal latch at the front.Beige vinyl machine with leather carry strapbraille equipment, assistive devices -

Kruikezeiker (Jug Pisser) Statue
A link to the folkloric custom that the poor sold their urine to the wool industry where it was used in wool washing. Current depictions of a stereotypical Kruikezeiker are based on the Tilburg sculpture created by Henk Smulders (1925-1994). Said statue is located on Nieuwlandstraat, Tilburg. Tilburg has embraced this legend and named itself "Kruikezeiker Stad" (Jug City). The legend is brought to the fore during Karneval celebrations. It is a symbol of the city. Bronze (?) male figure depicting him about to fill a jug with his urine. His right hand lifts his garment while he holds the jug in his left. Base edge carries the name: "H.Smulders" on the back; "Tilburg" on the side and "Kruikezeiker" on the front.statue, tilburg, kruikezeiker -

Article - Newspaper article "Last Hoot" development - Summer of 1984/85
Over the summer of 1984/85 extensive regeneration work was carried out to establish the “Last Hoot”. It was a big job and took all summer to complete the work which included throwing rocks of the run, digging in cross drains and spreading the area with hay. All work was done manually. Though difficult physical work, those who dedicated their time and labour to the task have interesting memories of that time, including arriving to load up hay bales only to find the cattle from the high plains had walked across the dam wall to come and enjoy a fabulous feast! The Hoot Ski Trail has two sections. Fast Hoot is a 341 metre blue downhill run located near Falls Creek. The Last Hoot is a one km blue ski run (piste) trail which can be used in both directions. It finishes at Slalom Plaza in Falls Creek Village. Snowlands Lodge is near the bottom of the trail in Slalom Street. One of its most popular features is “The Last Hoot” Restaurant. This article is significant because it documents the work carried out to establish a popular ski trail at Falls Creek, VictoriaThis newspaper article reports on the work carried out to prepare for a new ski trail the "Last Hoot" at Falls Creek over the summer of 1984/85.In image L to R Debbie Howie, Larraine Boulton, Nina Frueauf, Rob McEwan, Eric Napierthe last hoot, deb howie -
