A separator is a centrifugal device that separates milk into cream and skimmed milk. Separation was commonly performed on farms in the past where farmers milked a few cows, usually by hand, and separated by letting milk sit in a container until the cream floated to the top when it could be skimmed off by hand. Some of the skimmed milk was consumed while the rest was used to feed calves and pigs. Enough cream was saved to make butter, and the excess was sold. Manual rotation of the separator handle turns a mechanism which causes the separator bowl to spin at thousands of revolutions per minute. When spun, the heavier milk is pulled outward against the walls of the separator and the cream, which is lighter, collects in the middle. The cream and milk then flow out of separate spouts. Montgomery Ward was founded by Aaron Montgomery Ward in 1872.as a mail-order business in Chicago, Illinois USA. Rural customers were attracted by the wide selection of items that were unavailable to them locally and were also inspired by the innovative company policy of "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back".This milk separator is typical of the type used by early settlers in Moorabbin Shire where every family owned a 'house cow' to supply their dairy needs. Households also kept a few chickens for eggs and developed a vegetable garden with additional fruit trees. Max COWARD ( -1991) Born Ballarat Max Coward was training to be an art teacher at the Ballarat Technical Art School from 1937 to 1941. He enlisted in the A.I.F. and was a Naval Trainee at Flinders Naval Depot in 1941. During these years Max Coward was described as a cartoonist and illustrator, and was attached to the Naval Intelligence Division in 1945, producing stories and drawings for the Navy newspaper Dit. His work was reproduced in the Christmas annual, HMAS Mk IV and the Army educational journal, Salt. Coward was active as a printmaker in the 1970s. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Sepia toned digital image of Isabella Macdonald nee Munroe (1820-1906) Born in Skye, Scotland, Isabella arrived in Melbourne on the 'Glen Huntly' on April 17, 1840. She died at Cranbourne in 1906.Isabella Munroe travelled to Australia with her mother, travelling under her maiden name of Mary McKenzie, on the Glen Huntley, arriving in the Port Phillip District 17 April 1840. The Glen Huntley arrived flying the yellow quarantine flag indicating it was carrying passengers with infectious diseases. Of a passenger complement of 170 passengers, during the voyage 105 contracted various diseases including fever, scarlatina, measles, small pox, and chicken pox. Both Mary and Isabella were held for a period in the camp at Little Red Bluff or Red Cliffs, known today as Point Ormond. Isabella married Alexander Macdonald at Scots Church, Melbourne on 17 February 1841. After their marriage they started the sheep run named Stringy Bark, on the Yarra, near where Kew is today. With two young kids, I often find myself at Coburg Lake on a weekend, playing amongst the natural beauty of the park area, rugged embankments, local birdlife, and... ‘Bin Chicken Island’. Bin Chicken Island has become a running joke in the community, known for its wafting stench and as an environmental eyesore (never go to the park on a warm day with an easterly breeze). So much so that someone added a campground listing on the island to Google Maps. Whenever I drive past the lake, I always keep an eye out for disgruntled backpackers who have realised that the only camping to be had is by the Bin Chickens themselves. I am a local graphic designer who lives in Pascoe Vale and works in Brunswick. I head up the design studio, Atticus Design.10Press brings together a diverse group of creatives who were invited to make a new artwork inspired by the theme of ‘Moreland: its creative future, its past or other hidden stories’. Artists were invited to respond to the prompt ‘Moreland’, using only one or two colours. This body of work was created in 2022 during a significant time in local history, which saw Council’s name change from ‘Moreland’ to ‘Merri-bek’. The printed bellyband of the folio highlights this transition, with the word ‘Moreland’ crossed out and replaced with Woiwurrung language name ‘Merri-bek’.
