John Parkes avoids technology. This work expects the viewer to understand the importance of the hand and time… The blanket and the apron were gifted by friends in Germany. The apron was worn by Helen in her studio practice as a jeweller. The blanket was a find in the cellar of their Munich apartment. The red moleskin cloth was an OP shop find and originally a eucalyptic green. This cloth was discharged and overdyed. Cloth will often sit around the house, unattended, until ideas germinate. Is “Art” about “Art” or about the “Artist”?... There is a Buddhist notion of not writing in the first person, in that the Ego is not employed. There is a Japanese tradition “Boro” in which cloth is not discarded but repaired. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. John Mitchell was born c. 1830 in Cornwall and travelled to Victoria with his father in 1853. Arriving in Bendigo they both worked as blacksmiths before his father returned to Cornwall. John plied his trade in Mundy Street, Bendigo before selling the business in 1865 after 11 years. Upon the discovery of gold in Western Australia, John travelled there and back three times before dying in Bendigo in 1902. He lived in Violet st., and left a wife, Elizabeth Hannah, and daughter, Mrs E Morris. Early business in Sandhurst in 1850s.An account book used by the John Mitchell to record the purchases and services made with his business. Records date from 1859 - 1868. The book has lost its front cover, but the back cover is still attached. The book is made up of several sections stitched together and bound with three pieces of cotton cloth. The pages are light blue with ruled columns. There are alphabetical tabs at the front of the book with lists of names. Individual customers are allocated a double page entry. Pages numbers are written at the top of pages. The book is in very poor condition having obvious signs of water and insect damage with visible patches of mold. Worn by VX45541 Lieutenant Louis A Jackson who served with 2nd/8th Armoured Regiment in Australia and New Guinea during WWII. Following its return from New Guinea in 1944, 2nd/8th Armoured Regiment had a change of role and was redesignated Numbers 41, 42 and 43 Landing Craft Companies and served in Pacific Islands till the end of the war. In 1948, Louis Jackson joined the Citizen Forces (CMF) and served as a captain in the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. The 1st Australian Armoured Car Squadron was raised at Puckapunyal, Victoria in January 1946 from 4th Armoured Brigade volunteers. Following two months training it deployed to Japan as part of the occupation force joining the Australian 34th Brigade. The squadron was equipped with Canadian Scout Cars and Staghound Armoured Cars. The latter were found to be unsuitable for patrol duties on Japanese roads and replaced with additional scout cars. The 1st Armoured Car Squadron returned to Australia in December 1948 and became the basis for the 1st Armoured Regiment. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion and deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Separate cloth belt ...Dust coat worn by Mr Frederick Alister Jennings when he managed a family grocery store circa 1948 at 510 Point Nepean Road, East Brighton. Frederick was born at Nagambie, Victoria in 1909 and died in Brighton in 1979. He was the son of Hugh Edwin Jennings and Alice Constance Warren. He married Margaret Jean Hughes in 1934 and served in the Second World War. He lived at 1 Valda Grove Brighton. Frederick was a commercial traveller as well as his time spent managing the store in Point Nepean Road. It is believed this coat dates from his time at the store c1948 - 1955. The store was owned for many years by his father-in-law W. G. Hughes and was one of a group of shops near the corner of Centre Road. In 1944-45 the group of shops included Fletcher’s fuel merchants, a haberdasher, butcher, fruiterer, grocer, Brighton East post office, a ladies’ hairdresser and Hughes’ grocer. In 1950 Hughes’ grocery store was between a service station and the Commercial Bank on what had been renamed Nepean Highway. The business was sold to G. S. Maynard, grocer, sometime before 1960.Unlined dustcoat of beige cotton. Fastens centre front with three brown plastic buttons. Two large patch pockets. Separate cloth belt with metal buckle. Khaki coloured dress trousers with pressed seam running vertically down front and back of each leg. Two hip pockets, one on each side, with rear pocket on right side fastened by plastic button; additional pocket sits in waistline on right side. Trousers have seven loops for a belt and smaller loops for metal inserts which support a Sam Brown belt. Trousers fastened by a zipper in front and flap which secures with a plastic button on the interior. Spare button is sewn into the interior waistband. Leg hem is reinforced at front and back with strip of synthetic binding, presumably to aid against wear from rubbing on boots. Falls Creek was operated by the Falls Creek Area Management Committee. Its composition changed over time but generally the Committee was composed of representatives of the State Electricity Commission, Representatives from Ski Clubs and commercial enterprises, the Country Roads Board, the Ski Tow company and a Representative of the Upper Murray Regional Committee of the Central Planning Authority. Slouch hats were first worn by the Victorian Mounted Rifles in 1885. It was originally worn with the right side looped up to make it easier for marching troops to perform the “eyes right” command in parades but as more states adopted the slouch hat, it became more common to wear the left side turned up. The slouch hat was widely worn by Australian soldiers during the Boer War and it was universally adopted for the Australian Army after Federation. It was usually worn with a khaki hatband, known as a puggaree, and a Rising Sun badge on the left-hand side. The word ‘slouch’ refers to the sloping brim. The brim is made from rabbit-fur felt or wool felt and is always worn with a puggaree. The majority of the Australian Army wear the light khaki coloured puggaree, with a unit colour patch sewn on the right side, however, there are slight variations. The seven pleats in the standard puggaree represent each state and one for the Australian Territories.The slouch hat is an object strongly associated with Australian identity.Australian Army standard issue khaki fur felt slouch hat with leather chinstrap, commonly worn as part of a military uniform. Wide-brimmed with snap up latch on left-hand-side. Without Rising Sun badge or unit colour patch. 7 fold/pleat khaki cloth band puggaree around the hat. Dark brown leather sweatband, embossed with a gold stamp identifying manufacture as Akubra, date of manufacture as 1988, size 58, and a broad arrow to signify the hat is owned by the Australian Department of Defence. The Falls Creek Search and Rescue Squad was formed in the mid 1970s. It was partly instigated by Rob Spargo whose family purchased the site where the Falls Creek Hotel is today. The family was instrumental in the establishment and growth of the Falls Creek community and were involved in the foundation of Falls Creek Primary School and Falls Creek Search & Rescue (now Falls Creek SES). Rob was also involved in the start-up of Ski Victoria and has served as a member the Chamber and Resort Management Board. The banner and frame were carried by representatives of the 38th Battalion during parades..1) Rectangular red cloth banner with gold coloured fringing sewn to the bottom edge. Red cloth loops are sewn onto each side and the top to facilitate attachment to the metal frame - see .2). Printed on both sides in gold, black and white - '38 Battalion AIF'.
