Dixon collection is well provenanced and provides not only some insights into the working life of a seafarer of the merchant service but also includes photographs through ID papers. Dixon, VI. 7290.This item has historical signifigance as a an example of Australian military uniform dating presemably to World War II. Military peak cap, dark green. Brown leather chinstrap, attached by buttons on either side of visor with lettering 'AUSTRALIAN MILITARY FORCES' and Australian army insignia. Top of cap has double row of top stitching in dark yellow thread. Metal rimmed air holes (two) on each side under top of cap. Inner band made of brown leather embossed or printed with maker inscription. Rear of inner band has a row of rectangles punched through leather .50 mm in length, 22 in total, threaded through with gold coloured ribbon, tied together at centre back. Inner cap lining made of pale gold fabric, with diamond shaped liner/swear shield attached and topstitched in gold thread. St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool was opened in 1875 with the Minister in 1895 being the Rev. W. Gray Dixon. At this time the Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavour was active and there was great enthusiasm for supporting missionary work in China and India. This newsletter is of considerable importance as it is an original document and describes the activities of the Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool in the 1890s and gives us some idea of the character of the church at the time. It includes information on Fred Newcombe who later died in India while working as a medical missionary and the names of many people who made their mark in our history. This is a white four-page printed newsletter - St. John’s Quarterly Record, No. 21, Warrnambool, April, 1895. The front page contains an image of St. John’s Church. This important booklet and record of service is first stamped and dated in 1913. It is unlikely to be the first booklet issued as the seafarer Arthur O. Dixon b. 1879 commenced maritime service in 1904 working for the Harrison Line between 1904 and 1914. He enlisted as an RNR officer during WW1. He is recorded as returning to Merchant vessel service with the New Zealand Shipping Co between 1916-1920. He subsequently was employed with Adelaide Steamship Co between 1920 and 1921. All documentation shows him to be regarded as an officer of good character and reliable. On leaving seafaring Mr Dixon eventually took up a smallholding in regional Victoria.Unusually for the early 20th C. era of Mr Dixon's service at sea two images of Mr Dixon survive on ID papers and were included in the gift of papers. Personal objects included an unusual small travel size New Testament (see VC record ) heavily annotated provide further insights into the experience of early 20th C. seafarers.Fabric reinforced and backed heavy card covers and service book with multiple pages pre printed for completion by either handwritten entries or ink stamps. Photographs taken of the first computer of Ballarat School of Mines / Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education Mount Helen Campus. This mainframe computer was purchased in 1969 for $116,000 and set up in the First Stage Engineering building (later F Building). It was the first operational teaching facility on the new campus. The initial computer centre staff were Arch McKinnon ad Manager and Judy Wilson as Key Punch Operator.. In 1972 Brian Dixon operated this computer for a night or two a week. He obtained an operators certificate as part of a Maths course at Ballarat College of Advanced Education, and lecturer Arch McKinnon offered Brian Dixon a night job.Four photographs relating to the ICL1911A computer.
