Film, 217698 Greg Cant, 1st Australian Field Hospital December 1968 - December 1969
Ektachrome slide image. Operating theatre photo of doctors operating on a patient. 4 figures plus patient. Photograph taken by Alan Barry PearceThe two outstanding physical aspects of Vung Tau that one has to adjust to are sand and blood. The sand is like fine salt and it eddies around the huts and covers your clothes, possessions and body, but the blood is a worse curse. The smell of blood is a physical sensation that you not only smell but taste. The cloying sweet smell permeates your skin and can't be scrubbed out. Its memory will last the rest of my life.1st australian field hospital, medical -

Book, The secret love letters: a family history, 2014
The author delves into the history of her Spanish ancestors, the San Miguels, and uncovers the forbidden love affair that tore the family apart. Fay Johnston told her daughter of a collection of letters she had kept hidden away for over 60 years, promising to show them to her when the time was right. It was only after her mother died that Dolores found the letters, concealed beneath a large piece of wood deep within a storage cupboard. Through endless research and close analysis, Dolores pieced together nearly a hundred letters, newspaper ads, doctors' notes, and postcards to unravel the story of her parents' romance. Dolores San Miguel is also the author of The Ballroom: The Melbourne Punk and Post-punk Scene. Her family history is placed in the wider context of early European immigration to Australia, as well as offering a fascinating glimpse into Melbourne life in the lead-up to World War 2.278p; Fay Johnston told her daughter (Dolores San Miguel) of a collection of letters she had kept hidden away for over sixty years, promising to show her but it was only after she died that the letters were found along with postcards, and doctors' notes. Sculpture - Porcelain figurine of an obstetrician holding a baby
George Zoltan Lefton, a Hungarian immigrant who came to the United States in 1939, was the driving force behind Lefton China. Although he began his career in clothing and sportswear, his porcelain collecting interest led to the formation of the Lefton Company in 1940. Headquartered in Chicago, the company was a wholesale and marketer of ceramic goods. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Lefton helped his friend Nunome, a Japanese American, board up his business to avoid looting. When the war ended, Nunome introduced Lefton to Japanese ceramic manufacturers during the Japanese occupation. Lefton was one of the first American businessmen to work with these manufacturers. (WorthPoint)Porcelain figurine of a doctor holding a baby. The doctor has black hair, is of male appearance, and is dressed in surgical attire, consisting of a short sleeved white surgical gown and cap, brown trousers and black and white shoes. There is a glove protruding from the pocket of the gown at the left hip. The doctor is holding a baby by its ankles in his left hand, and is holding his right hand against the baby's bottom. The baby is crying. The figure is seated on the edge of a stool, and standing on a brown coloured base. There is a copyright symbol (a c inside a circle) printed on the underside of the base of the statue, along with the text 'geo.z.Lefton/THE O.B.' Sticker attached to underside of base reads 'Lefton/TRADE MARK/EXCLUSIVES/JAPAN'.obstetrics -

Textile - Blanket, Kelsall and Kemp, 1950s
Collector says: "I would stack plain blankets of the same base colour and arrange them by shade to make up a colour palette. It showed how particular colours were in fashion in the early decades, based mostly around depths of pastel pinks, mints, lemons and baby blues with brighter colours arriving in the 1960s then the browns and oranges in heavier tones in the 1970s.Collector's note: "For more than 100 years blankets were made all over Australia in over 100 woollen mills. My aim, is to preserve 100 examples of these wonderful pieces of history. Ten years ago I started collecting the iconic Onkaparinga travel rugs, so that on movie nights at home there would be plenty to go around. Everyone had their favourite; even the cat had his own – a small red tartan one. Keeping an eye out for those travel rugs at op-shops and markets, collectable stores and bazaars, led to noticing vintage blankets. I'd never really thought about them before or paid much attention though of course I had grown up with them at my grandmother's. When I discovered my first Laconia cream blanket with blue stripes, my eyes just went gaga. Well that was it, I was hooked and since then over 500 blankets have passed through my hands. These common, everyday items, found in all households for so many decades, were traditional engagement gifts. Pairs were prized wedding presents turning into family heirlooms. They were fashionable dressers of beds, givers of warmth, bestowers of security and reliability. The comfort found in these objects resonates with almost all of us; we grew up with them ourselves or fondly recall them in a grandparent’s home. There is no modern replacement with the integrity of these old blankets, many of them now older than most of us. They are romantic, sensible, special, familiar, nostalgic and nothing else feels so appropriate in so many situations. No offense to the great Aussie doona, but from hippie to hipster, at a music festival, picnic, campsite or couch, a vintage blanket is something coveted by all. This industry that employed tens of thousands and must have been such a huge contributor to the economy is almost completely lost now. Blanket Fever is an ode to everything that came before: the land, the sheep, the shearers, the hands, the mills, the weavers, the designers, the distributors, the department stores. To the grandparents that gave them, the people that received them, the families that kept them; thank you. I’m passionate about my collection of Australian blankets manufactured in mostly Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania from the 1930s to the end of the 1960s. The collection has blankets from each of these four decades representing the styles and fashions of their time and includes dated advertisements which help determine the eras the blankets are from."Queen sized blanket, soft pastel pinkWarranted 100% Pure Wool/The Famous "Doctor" Regd/Blanket Made in Tasmania/in Emblem "K&K" (first K mirror image)/Regdwool, blanket, blanket fever, the famous doctor, kelsall and kemp, tasmania
