Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. On the occasion, the Board Committee presented the Governor with one of the framed Harbour Hilghts Guild badges (2 of 20). As the first female Governor of Victoria, she was a Patron of the Mission. Surrey Hills Historical Society CollectionPhotograph - Surrey College staff and boarders, 1899, 1899
Surrey College was opened in early 1892 by Rev. Dr Frederick Darling who had been the first minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canterbury Road. He resigned this position to open the school which operated until 1908 with additional premises at 12 Vincent Street. The school had 40 boarders as well as day boys. Courses included algebra, euclid, history, typewriting, shorthand and drill. In the 1930s, Nethercourt Private Hospital took over the site. Later it became St Jude's Hospital. land in front of the building was subdivided off in the 1970s. The building is still extant as a private dwelling with York Street, Surrey Hills as the address. This is one of 3 photos donated by Susan Hobbs, whose grandfather Rev. George Edward Downton is thought to have been a student at the college. George E. Downton was born in Avoca in 1885. He was later a missionary in New Guinea and Secretary to the Australian Board of Missions in Adelaide. He died in 1926 or 1927. Sepia photo of 26 men and boys and one female against a background of a two-storey brick building. This is the rear of the Surrey College. There are 4 additional figures in the background and an additional house can be seen beyond the property boundary. Many of the boys wear or hold caps or boaters. The 2 men in the back row on the right are wearing academic gowns and mortar boards. The gentleman with the beard on the end is Rev. Frederick Darling, the Principal of the college. Sepia photo on cream mount board. Note that the photo is detached from the mount, so the photo is numbered SHP2025.15.1 and the mount as SHP2025.15.2.Front: "Surrey College - Surrey Hills / Principal: Rev. Fredk. A. DARLING, Melb. The first teachers college established in regional Victoria in 1926. Originally it was at the Long Gully Primary School. The college catered for female students until 1946 when 8 male students were included. Comersdale:- Originally built by James Hendry and named after his pastoral property at Yakool, in NSW. It was acquired by the Bendigo Teachers College in 1949 and in 1950 began as the second hostel for student teachers. Jessie Carnegie Burnett (1902-11/9/1994):- was the daughter of David Burnett and his wife Bridget.She was born, trained as a teacher and died in BendigoA brown manilla folder with the word "Comersdale" on the front. Geoffrey Kaye Museum of Anaesthetic HistoryHeadwear - Academic Bonnet
This academic bonnet belonged to Dr Mary Burnell. Mary Taylor Burnell was born on 21 February 1907, in Norwood, South Australia. She graduated with her MBBS in 1931. In 1932, Burnell served as a resident medical officer at Adelaide Children’s Hospital. By 1934 she was their Honorary Anaesthetist. It was also during this period that Burnell became the first female member of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. One year later, in 1935, she worked as Secretary for the South Australian Section of the Society. Although resigning from her position at the Children’s Hospital in 1937, Burnell returned in 1942. The outbreak of World War II meant hospital staff and resources were drained. During her work, Burnell lobbied for a Department of Anaesthetics in the Children’s Hospital. Through working at both hospitals, she became aware of the great differences between administering anaesthesia to children and administering it to adults. In 1953 she was elected President of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. She was the first female to be elected to this position. Two years later in 1955, Burnell was elected as a member of the Board of Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. In 1966 she was elected Dean of the Faculty of Anaesthetists. Again, she was the first female to be elected to this position. Burnell worked tirelessly to promote the importance of anaesthetics in Australia. Burnell’s contributions to anaesthetics were recognised with Honorary Fellowships to both the Australian Faculty of Anaesthetists and Royal College of Surgeons. Navy blue velvet cloth bonnet with stiffened brim covered in same fabric as bonnet.
