Sculpture, 'The Collaboration of Commonality and Difference' by Cassandra McArthur, 2014
The 'Collaboration of Commonality and Difference' has its conceptual roots in teh notion that only when we accept and nurture both commonality and difference, can we, humankind, foster unity. With the acceptance and nurturing of commanality and difference, peoples of the world are afforded equal validity for a collaborative approach towards peaceful resolution and possible unity. Integral to the conceptual foundation of the work is the use of papers sourced from around the world. Paper is at once universal and individual, and in this instance is representative of humanking. The jigsaw design draws on the understanding that each piece is integral to the creation and resolution of the whole. Commanality is suggested through repetition, however, no two pieces are the samem emphasizinf the beautym strength and validity of difference. Established in 2004, generously supported by George Lucato, the Lucato Peace Prize was an annual acquisitive art award open to all enrolled Federation University Australia tertiary students and all senior secondary students enrolled at any City of Ballarat secondary school or college. Prizes were awarded to the applicants whose work best illustrates or expresses the idea that 'peaceful alternatives are always preferable to armed confrontations'. First prize of $2250.00 was awarded to Cassandra McArthur for her work, Commonality and Difference, 2014, and it was the last Lucato Peace Prize Awarded after the death of George Lucato in 2014. Cassandra McArthur was undertaking a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Fine Arts) at the Federation University Arts Academy when this artwork was produced. Ceremonial object - Common Seal, Shire of Marong, unknown
A seal is the corporate signature of an organisation. It is usually referred to as a ‘common seal’, meaning it represents a whole company ‘in common’, rather than any individual committee member, director or agent. A common seal can be used to signify the company or association’s authority or approval of a certain action, such as signing a legal document, or authenticating an award or certificate. It might also be used as the emblem or symbol of an organisation. This seal was for the former Shire of Marong now part of the City of Greater Bendigo.Circular, brass seal with wooden handle. Torpedo Bottle - Whittaker Bros. Tarnagulla / Maryborough
David Gordon Collection. Torpedo bottles, also known as Hamilton bottles, were used for aerated or carbonated water. They were oval shaped with a neck at one end, and were deliberately designed so that they could not be stored upright. Torpedo bottles were in common use from the 1840s to the 1870s, when they were superseded by the Codd Neck bottle. -

Box wooden containing a set of 12 coloured china carpet bowls, Mid 1940s
Harcourt Methodist Church was instrumental in forming the Harcourt Carpet Bowls Association with many members common to both organisations. This commenced about 1948 and is still in existence in 2017. The bowls were used at some church social evenings in addition to being used in the Harcourt Carpet Bowls competition. Mr. William A. Carr was the prime mover in this activity. Reminds us of the rise of post-World War II community organisations to fill the social gap left by the winding up of wartime patriotic associations. Decorative object - Fob sovereign Holder
The first British gold sovereign was minted as long ago as 1489 under the reign of Henry VII. Subsequent monarchs issued their own gold coins until the reign of James I, crowned King of England and Scotland in 1603 when the practice died out. The modern use of the sovereign and half sovereign coins as common currency in Britain began in 1817. In Australia, the Sydney Mint was established as a branch of the Royal Mint in London in 1855. Its primary role, together with the mints of Melbourne (1872-1931) and Perth (1899-1931) was to strike Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns from the gold that had been discovered in the goldfields of Victoria and New South Wales in 1851. During the First World War, the Sovereign - like most gold and silver coins - was gradually withdrawn from general circulation, although special limited issue coins have frequently been minted for special events, such as the Platinum Jubilee and recent death of Queen Elizabeth 11. Sovereign cases were small portable boxes usually in cylindrical shape and made from various metals with snapshut covers to contain the coin. The spring in the base allowed several coins to be stored in a small container. These fob holders were particularly common in the late 19th to early 20th century and were frequently used by men who could then safely carry coins in their suit pockets. This case was used by a member of the Raper family of Wodonga, Victoria. This item is from the Raper Collection donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Mrs. Jean Raper.A small silver case with a fob attachment designed to hold sovereign and half sovereign coins. Inside the case are 2 circular spring loaded receptacles to hold the coins. The lid is lined with velvet. A clip and fob is attached to the front of the case.currency, predecimal coins -
