Book, John Stuart Mill, On liberty
At the time it was published in 1859, John Stuart Mill's On Liberty was a radical and controversial work; it argued for the right of individuals to possess freedom from the state in moral and economic matters. Mill declares that ""Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign"", contrasting this with the ""tyranny of the majority."" He states that an individual can do anything they like as long as it doesn't harm another.Index, p.172.non-fictionAt the time it was published in 1859, John Stuart Mill's On Liberty was a radical and controversial work; it argued for the right of individuals to possess freedom from the state in moral and economic matters. Book, McMillan and Co, The life of Benvenuto Cellini, 1908
You should know that men like Benvenuto, unique in their profession, need not be subject to the law.'" "Thus spoke Pope Paul III on learning that Cellini had murdered a fellow artist, so great was Cellini's reputation in Renaissance Italy. A renowned sculptor and goldsmith, whose works include the famous salt-cellar made for the King of France, and the statue of Perseus with the head of the Medusa, Cellini's life was as vivid and enthralling as his creations. A man of action as well as an artist, he took part in the Sack of Rome in 1527; he was temperamental, passionate, and conceited, capable of committing criminal acts ranging from brawling and sodomy to theft and murder. He numbered among his patrons popes and kings and members of the Medici family, and his autobiography is a fascinating account of sixteenth-century Italy and France written with all the verve of a novelIndex, p.450.non-fictionYou should know that men like Benvenuto, unique in their profession, need not be subject to the law.'" Book, Thomas Carylyle, The French revolution : a history, ????
The French Revolution is a work by Scottish essayist, philosopher, and historian Thomas Carlyle. It is a massive, even heroic undertaking - one which hadn't been achieved before and has not since. Carlyle's literary style is unique: written in the present tense first-person plural, A History follows along chronologically as the events of the Revolution unfold with sweeping, apocalyptic grandeur. The reader feels as though he or she were observing, participating almost in, the events occurring on the Paris streets. The reader is carried along day-by-day, month-by-month as the as the inevitable.Index, p.609non-fictionThe French Revolution is a work by Scottish essayist, philosopher, and historian Thomas Carlyle. Book, George Routledge And Sons, The rise of the Dutch Republic v.3, 1869
American historian John Lothrop Motley (1814–77) graduated from Harvard in 1831. During 1832 and 1833 he studied in Göttingen before returning to the United States. Already the author of two novels and numerous essays, he began to plan a history of the Netherlands, but, unable to find all the source material he needed in America, he returned to Europe in 1851, this time with his family. The next few years he spent researching in Dresden, The Hague and Brussels. The result was this famous account of the foundation of the Dutch Republic, first published in 1855. Volume 2 starts with the end of Margaret of Parma's governorship and then describes the start of the Eighty Years' War, covering the period 1567–76, including the governorship of the duke of Alva and the so-called Council of Blood by which he attempted to quash the movement for Dutch independence from Spain.Index, p.481.non-fictionAmerican historian John Lothrop Motley (1814–77) graduated from Harvard in 1831.
