The vase was made from the liquefaction that came out of the Christchurch earthquake of 22 February 2011. The vase was gifted to the College by Professor Edward Shipton (known as Ted) on his retirement as Dean of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, and from Council. Professor Shipton is from New Zealand. The gift was accompanied by a card with the following inscription: "Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your great institution as Councillor and Faculty Dean these past two years. My gift to the College is a small vase. This vase was made from the liquefaction that came out of the 22 February 2011 Christchurch Earthquake. It pays tribute to the medical personnel, our Fellows and Trainees that gave so much during that time to preserve life and relieve suffering. This librarian's chair was given to the school by the family of Joy Chapman who had died during 1948. The chair was part of a number of furnishings supplied by donation for the new library which was opened in 1949. These included blackwood shelves, tables and chairs and a new set of Encycopedia Britannica supplied by the Parents and Friend's Association, a grooved periodical table given by Old Collegians Younger Set, a librarian's desk supplied by the E M Bell estate and more than 200 books supplied by the Old Collegians. (see 'A lamp burns brightly' p. 61). This item is a significant example of the degree to which the school relied on donations from the community to develop the school during the post-war years. The card relates to Flying Officer Ivan Francis SOUTHALL DFC & his marriage to Joy Blackburn on 8.9.1945. Ivan Francis SOUTHALL initially enlisted as No V27277 in the CMF on 11.3.1941 aged 20 years. He was discharged from the Army on 18.6.1942 with the rank of Gunner in 22nd Field Regiment. He enlisted the following day in the RAAF No 418900. He was discharged from the Air Force with the Rank of Flight Lieutenant on 19.11.1946.
