Book - The Branch Line : A history of the Wodonga - Tallangatta - Cudgewa Railway, Lloyd Holmes, 1985
This railway story concerns just one of the many branch lines that snaked across the landscape of Victoria. This book concentrates on the Wodonga - Tallangatta - Cudgewa line, a railway that took 32 years to complete from starting point to eventual terminus. The first section of the Wodonga to Tallangatta line opened in 1889 and was further extended in 1891. It was a vital community link until the passenger service closed in September 1961. The last regular goods train on the line ran on 21st April 1978. The north- east train line to Wodonga remained a significant factor in the development of Wodonga as a rural city in the 20th century.non-fictionThis railway story concerns just one of the many branch lines that snaked across the landscape of Victoria. Book, E Lloyd Sommerlad, The migrant shepherd : Ober-Rosbach to Tenterfield, 1986
This is the story of a German peasant who was contracted to serve as a shepherd for a Darling Downs squatter in the mid nineteenth century. John Henry Sommerlad sailed from Hamburg in a small sailing ship directly to Moreton Bay and then trudged behind a bullock waggon over the Great Dividing Range to a sheep run near Warwick. Later he settled in New England and became a successful pioneer farmer. The story is set in its historical context and the book describes the background of squatter expansion, labour problems during the gold rush and Australian immigration, as well as the life style of the pioneers. Part social history, part local history and part family history. The Migrant Shepherd makes an important and well documented contribution to the record of German settlement in Australia. In a Foreword. Professor Geoffrey Blainey says, "This story of his life, sensitively pieced together from many fragments, is like that of thousands of other Australians of his day. and that's what now makes it so revealing." Book - Skiing Into History 1924 - 1984, Janis M. Lloyd, 1986
The history of the Ski Club of Victoria is really a history of skiing in Victoria. When the Club was founded in 1924, skiing as a sport was almost unknown and what primitive skiing there was centred on the Chalet at Mt. Buffalo. Today's alpine resorts were non-existent; the Victorian alpine region was a winter wilderness and ski equipment was scarce. So the handful of SCV founders and their successors set out to foster and develop Victorian skiing. The Ski Club of Victoria story highlights the dedication and spirit of its members united in their aim to develop skiing. It tells of the enormous difficulties endured and the supreme efforts of the adventurous founders who, in working damned hard for their pleasures, opened up Victoria's alpine resources for skiing. It tells too of the devotion and persistence of those who have willingly served on the Committees and of the numerous unsung heroes who have, throughout the life of the Club, contributed unselfishly to its maintenance and development as a "labour of love". Their collective zeal and dedication to skiing is reflected directly in the mammoth achievements of the Ski Club of Victoria, achievements that have been largely responsible for the steady and sound development of skiing in Victoria and needless to say the viability and respected status of the Club itself.A volume of 731 pages including plans, tables, maps and illustrations plus 4 pages of colour plates. The cover is red with a silver border and title. It also features a representation of a skier.non-fictionThe history of the Ski Club of Victoria is really a history of skiing in Victoria.
