HMAS Quickmatch (G92/D21/D292/F04), named for the quick-match, a fast burning match used for lighting cannon, was a Q class destroyer operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Although commissioned into the RAN in 1942, the ship was initially the property of the Royal Navy. Quickmatch served with both the British Eastern Fleet and British Pacific Fleet during World War II. In the 1950s, the destroyer was converted into an anti-submarine frigate. In 1957, Quickmatch operated in support of Malaya during the Malayan Emergency. This was to prevent the use of U.S Dollars getting into the black market and use by the enemy. Every so often a change would happen and all money handed in and new notes would be issued. A VALE notice in the Bulletin on 1 February 2017 about the life of Legatee Colin Bannister. Legatee Bannister was a legatee for 40 years (1976-2016) Colin graduated the RMC Duntroon as an infantry officer and his active service included two year in Malaya with 3RAR in 1957-59 and two tours in South Vietnam, in 1964 with the Australian Army Training Team and in 1969 as GS02 (Ops) HQ of 1st Australian Task Force and the Australian Force Vietnam. He attained rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He joined Peninsula Group, Melbourne Legacy in 1976, and served as its president in 1985. Richard Squire was noted personality in the Ballarat region as a miner. He was interested in a number of mines, including the famous Madame Berry Lead. He was born in Richmond, and finished his education at the Ballarat School of Mines. He became manager of his first mine at the age of 23 years at Ararat Grand Junction. Later he spent two years mining in Malaya. On his return he became interested in mines at Allendale. In 1905 Richard Squire was manager of the West Berry Consols at Allendale, and developed an improved system of mine ventilation. He was successful in combating and remedying the gas and ventilation troubles of the Deep Mines of Creswick and Allendale Districts. The 18 letters are from Arthur Edmund TRANTER V50166 & VX52843 POW. they are to his wife Pat and Daughter Brenda from Darley Camp Australia, at Sea then in Malaya prior to becoming a POW. The exercise book was written by "Tranter" to his daughter Brenda while a POW in "Gloegoer Camp" near "Medan" in Northern Sumatra. It was dedicated to his daughter. He managed to keep this hidden throughout captivity in pristine condition. Throughout the book there are subheadings, Sumatra, Singapore, Rubber, Soedaa, Siboertoet, Malacca, The story of the Cocos Islands, the Celebes, Dutch Borneo. They are the stories of these places. Andrew John BALSILLIE MBE, JP. Jack as he was known enlisted in the Australian Army near the end of WWII No 31224 age 16 years. He then served in Malaya 1959 - 1961then Vietnam with the rank of Captain with 1st Aust Task Force HQ Light Aid Detachment (LAD) 7.5.1969 - 7.11.1969, HQ Aust Force Vietnam Army component 8.11.1969 - 7.5.1970. He retired with the rank of Major in 1985 after 40 years plus. He was awarded an MBE in 1969 for his services to the Australian War Memorial. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. .1) The first medal on the left is the BEM. There are 9 clasps denoting overseas service and 3 clasps denoting Long Service. Francis William (Dinky) Dean enlisted in the 2nd AIF No VX93960 on 16.12.43 age 18 years. He went on to serve with the 2nd/2nd Pioneers in the islands ending up on Morotai at wars end. At the end of 1945 while still overseas 3 new Battalions were formed for service wth BCOF in Japan. They were the 65th, 66th and 67th Bn’s made up from 3 Aust Divisions 6th, 7th and 9th. Frank was one of the first to sign up in the 65th Bn with same Regt No. They moved to Japan in early 1946. While still in Japan in 1947 there was a period called the Interim Army while the 65th, 66th and 67th Bn’s were designated 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bn’s R.A.R, Aust Regular Army. His Regt No changed to 3742 and the 65th became the 1st Batt of the R.A.R. He then served with 1 RAR in Korea 7.4.52 to 28.2.53, 3.3.54 to 24.3.56. Malaya during the Emergency/ Confrontation Oct 1959 to Oct 1961. Vietnam 1.6.65 to 7.6. 66, 18.3.68 to 11.2.69. Malaya 1969-70. Frank was discharged from the Army on 19.12.1975 with the rank of Quarter Master Sergeant with a total of 32 years service. He was the longest serving member of 1 RAR, he had a final posting to RMC prior to discharge. BEM (British Empire Medal) For service in Korea. This hat was sent home to Laanecoorie, from Malaya, in 1941 by Driver Cyril John Johnson VX36298, 1 Coy A.A.S.C whilst a POW. Cyril enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 17.6.1940 age 22 years 2 months. Posted to 8th Div Petrol Coy Seymour 25.7.1940, hospital 12.8.1940 with Mumps, rejoin unit 31.8.1940, embark for overseas 2.2.1941, disembark Singapore 19.2.1941. He is listed as missing on 16.2.1942 and later listed as POW in a Thai Camp no date. (He was on the Burma Railway) Last entry on his records states Presumed to be dead 12.9.1944 SWPA. (South West Pacific Area) He with hundreds of others were on the Japanese prison ship Rakuyo Maru to Japan when it was sunk by an American submarine. The hand written signatures on the hat include high ranking AIF Officers, major local Officials and dozens of 8th Division AIF soldiers. British pattern Pith Helmet, khaki coloured cotton cloth with brown leather strap over the top. Large quantity of hand written names on top. Inside rim has green felt lining. The Album belonged to Graeme Arthur Jones, enlisted on 1.2.1967 in the 1st Intake National Service for that year. He was posted to 1 PL A Coy 2RTB Regt No 3790932. After initial training he would be posted to A Coy 8 RAR. 8 RAR had deployed to Malaya in Oct 1967. Graemes National Service was completed and he was discharged on 31.1.1969. His service with 8 RAR was 1 year 93 days. A number of people have been identified in the album by a former A Coy Member. In one photo: Sgt Ebner, Barry Popworth, R Venables, George Newton. On other photo has Keith Boase. On Sunday 3 March troops paraded through Sydney commemoraing the century of the departure of the New South Wales Coningent, Australia's first overseas force, to the Sudan War. Item issued to Cyril John WATSON. Cyril enlisted initially in the 17th Machine Gun Regt on 29.9.1939. He rose through the ranks to Lieut on 23.7.1940. Seconded to the 2nd AIF as VX39057 on 1.11.1940 with 4th Anti Tank Regt age 22 years 5 months. Embarked for Malaya 3.2.1941, hospital on ship with Influenza 11.2.1942, disembark Singapore 18.2.1942 and into hospital, rejoin unit 3.3.1941. Listed as Missing 16.2.1942, reported POW Borneo dated 22.3.1943, rescued from the Japanese 12.9.1945 at Kuching Borneo, hospital 2/9th AGH with Malnutrition and Malaria then to 2/2nd Aust Hospital Ship and stopping Morotai arriving Sydney 19.9.1945, then to Victoria and Heidelberg Military Hospital 14.10.1945. Although a bit sketchy it appears on his records he may have had Pulm T.B in early 1946, finally being discharged from the AIF on 17.1.1947. Over 500 members of 4th Anti Tank Regt were taken POW. The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft that was used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during, and after World War II. No. 243 Squadron was a flying squadron of the Royal Air Force. Originally formed in August 1918 from two flights that had been part of the Royal Naval Air Service, the squadron conducted anti-submarine patrols during the final stages of World War I. The squadron was later re-raised during World War II, operating initially as a fighter squadron in Malaya and Singapore during 1941–42. It was briefly disbanded just prior to the fall of Singapore, and was re-formed in mid-1942, again as a fighter squadron, and fought in the Tunisian and Italian campaigns in 1942–44, before being disbanded in October 1944.
