The donor George Lister Coop was about 21 years of age when he took this photo in 1958 from the Coop family home at 688 Whitehorse Road. Ralph Walton, a bricklayer, and his wife Maria lived at 690 Whitehorse Road from c1931 (when it was numbered 447) until their deaths. Maria died in 1944 aged 77 years and Ralph died in 1959 aged 85 years. Whitehorse Road was renumbered in 1936.A view from the adjacent front garden of 690 Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert which includes some garden details of 688. A wire fence divides the 2 properties. Harry Gorry bid for & purchased on internet auction site. The seller's mother was putting these & other items up for auction. Her father, the seller's grandfather was Dr. Bruno Koenig, a German surgeon detained by Allied forces while fleeing New Guinea in 1941. He was detained & sent to be interned in Camp 3, Tatura. There he met the painter Cesare Vagarini & they became friends, thus 4 years later upon the end of the war Vagarini gave the surgeon the two paintings in thanks & in memory of their friendship. Dr Koening then passed the paintings down to his daughter, where they remained in the family for 60 years. The seller's mother decided it was time to sell & was happy that the paintings went to a good home, as the family was until now unaware of the connection between Vagarini and the Tatura Museum. Harry Gorry just happened to notice a familiar name in an auction that he came across by accident & purchased them for our benefit. Aime Louis Ruedin (1847- 5/6/1896) was the son of Swiss immigrants Louis and his wife Catherine Schiener. Aime married Johanna Haemsen (1850 - 1909). in 1870. They planted extensive vineyards at Huntly and supplemented their income by selling fruit from their orchards. They had 7 children. In May 1903, fire began in the Ruedin home and spread to the winery. Some vats and winemaking equipment were save but approx 4000 gallons of casked wine was lost.Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from Tuesday, December 9, 2003. The caravel type ship with the cross represents the Santa Maria of Christopher Columbus. It is one of the symbols of the great sea explorers. A similar vase on sale on Ebay (April 2023) suggesting it was mass produced.One of the many decorative furnishings which date from the intense service periods of the Mission from the 1930s through to the 1960s. White painted ceramic vase on shallow circular foot with relief design of a stylised sailing ship (caravel) on one side. Built in 1861 on the south side of Symonds Street opposite Irvine Crescent this building was the home of John Hicks Petty. He operated the first Post Office in Yarra Flats from here. Mr Petty, holding a baby, is standing alongside his wife Maria Louisa Petty. The cottage is built of sawn timber, placed vertically, and a shingle roof.
