Nicholls produced and directed the production as well as performing as Prince Schmettoff. The accompanying programme provides a profile of Nicholls. It states that: Lance Nicholls (Prince Schmettoff), our producer, is a well known personality in the theatre and radio world, having created a reputation as an outstanding character actor through his roles in "Libel", "Streets of London", "Seven Day's Leave", "Village Priest". He was with J.C.W. for many years and a leading player with the late Gregan McMahon, The Roland McCarty Shakespearian Coy., and The Melbourne Little Theatre; also touring with the Council of Adult Education in "Tobias and the Angel" and "The Miser", then in "While the Sun Shines" for the Red Cross. Mr. Nicholls conducted his own Company of players, known as The Modern Theatre, who presented Shakespearian productions to schools and colleges, and has successfully produced many other plays and Musical Comedy. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. Martha Downes was born at Codrington in 1880. She was grand-daughter of the first Presbyterian minister of Clunes. As a child she belonged to the Erskine congregation. She was trained at the Deaconess' Institute and was appointed to the Fitzroy Mission, where the Rev. A.I. Davidson was Superintendent. Miss Downes was placed in charge of the Gore St. branch of the Mission. She started a Sunday morning children's church, a Sunday School, a Sunday evening service, a mothers' meeting, a girls' and boys' club and other activities. She helped raise funds for the Young St. Mission Hall, which was built in 1912. In 1914 Sister Downes retired due to ill health, but returned in 1915 to take charge of the Erskine Mission. Her interest in girls led to the establishment of Erskine Hostel, in a delicensed hotel in Rathdown St. Carlton, where classes, guilds, club meetings and services were held. Tate, lyrics by Harry Graham and additional lyrics by Frank Clifford Harris and Valentine. For the Kew production, the scenery was executed by James L. Alexander and the wardrobe supplied by J.C. Williamson.
