Photograph of the opening of the Fitzroy Northcote & Preston Tram on April 1, 1920, by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board who had taken over the Trust on 2/2/1920. Shows tram No. 4 being used as one of the opening trams at the Preston depot in Miller St. In the background is St Georges Road. The Trust conducted a trial run using tram No. 1 one week before the Trust was taken over by the MMTB. Reference identifies Miss Alice Membrey cutting the ribbon from the driver’s cab of FNPTT No 4 – opening day at Miller Street, 1 April 1920. Alice Membrey was the daughter of Mr George Membrey, MMTB Board Member. The report looks at major English cities, excluding London, transport to developing housing areas outside existing transport links, costs of conversion compared to buses, success of diesel buses (referred to as crude oil buses), construction of new tram lines, use of trolley buses and tables looking at the cost and revenues for each routes, comparison of service levels, capital costs and other factors. Recommends that the Collingwood cable line be closed as soon as practicable. The bottom stone was the foundation stone for the main building laid Tuesday 5 February 1907, and the middle stone was the foundation stone for the chapel, laid Tuesday 1 December 1908. The two stones were inserted on the wall of the current Mission building probably when the Siddeley Street institute was demolished. Photograph of Fitzroy, Northcote & Preston Tramways Trust (FNPTT) R class tramcar No.1 northbound on single track in Plenty Road, Preston approaching a double track loop south of Bell Street. The photograph looks southward showing an unsealed road surface with a few horse drawn carts, span poles and overhead wires, tramways overhead light above loop turnout and low density shop fronts. While this tramcar and track were constructed for the FNPTT, the line was only operated by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board from 1920. This car would soon be renumbered 151 and relocated to other lines Melbourne.Yields information about commencement of the Preston tram line and the Fitzroy, Northcote & Preston Tramways Trust. Stathi Raftopoulos is pictured at his home cinema at his residence in Sylvander Street North Balwyn. In 1949 Stathi Raftopoulos imported the first Greek film into Australia, entitled 'Voice of the Heart'. It was screened at Nicholas Hall in Lonsdale Street. Stathis went on to become a travelling picture show man showing Greek films to the Greeks in regional centres around Australia. He later established a film distribution and exhibition company, The Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures, in partnership with Mr Panayioti (Peter) Giannoudis. With the advent of television in the 1950, former suburban picture theatres were being closed down. Stathy Raftopoulos was instrumental in bring Greek films to Melbourne and screened them in various picture theatres in the inner Melbourne suburbs where most post WW2 migrants were living. Prior to the opening of Greek cinemas various venues were used for screenings including Nicholas Hall in Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.With the advent of television many suburban cinemas were no longer drawing the crowds. It was at this time that Stathi Raftopoulos with his partners in the Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures company purchased cinemas in the in suburbs of Melbourne where Greek immigrants were living - in 1960 the National Theatre in Richmond; 1961 the Sun Theatre Yarraville; 1965, the Paramount Theatre Oakleigh, Kinema Theatre Albert Park, and the Empire Theatre Brunswick and Westgarth Theatre Northcote. Here they screened Greek movies which entertained the Greek community supporting them to maintain their link with Greece and their culture and traditions.
