From 1988 to 2021, Legacy held a public speaking contest for young secondary school students. It was initially called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award (JPESA) and later called Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA). Schools were eligible to send along up to 4 representatives to compete in a preliminary round. These photos are from the first National Final on 17 October 1996. They show President Ray Ward congratulating the winner, Ross Ditcham from Flinders Christian Community College. Also Commonwealth Bank's Glenn Haslem presenting prize money. A guest speaker was Channel 7's sports presenter Jim Wilson. Other commended students were Simon Winkler and Penny Mayes and Luke Raffin. The following was taken from a programme in 1996: "The Award aim is to promote enhanced oral communication skills for 12-14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy - voluntary service, caring and comradeship - and the need for remembrance. It began in 1988 in the Melbourne area with the support of the Ministry of Education and The Plain English Foundation. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the State, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. An album of newspaper clippings and photos compiled to thank Legatee Philip E Potts when he was leaving Melbourne in 1928. L/ Potts was president of Legacy in 1927-28. The album was compiled by Legatee Frank Doolan. The articles included the first annual demonstration being held on 28 March 1928 with 300 junior legatees performing. Legatee Aaron Beattie was in charge with help from Mrs Gillies and Jim Tierney. Also articles about the proposed building of the Shrine of Remembrance and the appeal for funds. One page shows pictures of a social event held on the Burns Philp ship 'Marella'. Another photo of Marella is in the collection. Legatee Potts was manager of the old-established shipping firm Burns, Philip and Co Ltd. He also was president of the Melbourne 'Highland Pipe Band, a councillor of the Melbourne Scots and English Speaking Union, and a member of the Rotary Club. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee James George Gillespie, a long serving Legatee, on 21st May 1987. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. The article includes a snapshot of his life and career as a surveyor and long history of service in many fields. He was a member of the RMIT Council, on the board of he Royal Women's Hospital - both of whom named building after him. He served on the Hospitals and Charities Commission, and the Nurses Memorial Centre and Greenvale Geriatric Centre. Plus many more. He enlisted in the AIF 18 months after his older brother had been killed on the first day of the landing at Gallipoli. He was in the 46th Battery, 12th Artillery Brigade as a gunner. He served in France and Belgium and was in Paris on the day the Armistice was signed. In World War 2 he was called up and was appointed Assistant-Director of Survey, with a rank of Lieut-Colonel. Jim Gillespie joined Legacy in June 1928, being nominated by Frank Doolan and seconded by Harold Peters. He filled many posts, including vice-president in 1937 and President in 1938 The article was part of an folder about of past presidents that served on the LCC in preparation for the photo board that was produced.
