Photograph of a truck of firewood delivering wood for Operation Firewood, where firewood was delivered to widows. Some 400 tonnes of cut firewood was distributed amongst legacy Widows in the Melbourne Metropolitan Area this year (c1966). The firewood is collected by Cobram/Yarrawonga Group of Melbourne Legacy and transported free of charge to Melbourne by transport firms who provide trucks and drivers without charge. It came from a Legacy envelope marked P7, 1966. Eugene Carl Sandner was born in Bendigo in 1906. He was associated with the Bendigo and Northern District Base Hospital from 1935 – 1983 including Acting City Medical Officer in 1942 and serving as Medical Officer for 48 years. He was President of the Committee of Management from 1979- 1981. Dr Sandner retired from full time practice as a surgeon in 1971 and was first elected to council in August 1976 and elected Mayor of Bendigo for the 1978 – 79 term. Hand drawn cartoon by local cartoonist Ian Glanville which appeared in the Bendigo Advertiser around August 1979.This is one operation I have to / walk away from ...! Operation Float was an opportunity for junior legatees to experience sailing or boating on Port Philip Bay, often organised while they were at a summer camp. Junior Legatees from the country were brought to the city for a two week summer camp, often at Blamey House in Kew, while Junior Legatees from the city were billeted with families in the country. At the time Legatee Bert Davis was CFO, and his daughter Louise was asked to help with the running of the Blamey House camp.
