Possibly part of a series of photographs taken at the Geoffrey Kaye Museum when it was located at the University of Melbourne in the late 1940s, photographer unknown. The photograph was reproduced in the book One Grand Chain : The History of Anaesthesia in Australia 1846 - 1962 : Volume 2 1934 - 1962, Gwen Wilson, edited by Jeanette Thirlwell Jones, on page 459.Black and white photography depicting a group of six male students rehearsing with anaesthetic apparatus. Five of the students are standing and one student on the left of the photograph is sitting and holding an inhaler to his face. The boys are from Fiume, Istria a Zara They were ethnically cleansed by the Yugoslavs between 1945 and 1950, and emigrated under the UN Sponsorship Plan IRD to Australia, arriving on the M.V. Photograph of officer and 4 crew members rescued & interned. During June & July 1943 11 longrange Uboats including the U168, of the type 1xsc were despatched to the Indian Ocean forming what became known as the Monsun (Monsoon) Group. The U168 commanded by Kapitanleutenant Helmut Pich was intercepted on the surface off the coast of Surabaya on th 6-10-1944 by the Dutch submarine "Zwaardvisch" and sunk with a loss of 23 crew. Of the 27 survivors only 5, including the Kommandant were taken on the dutch submarine for transport to Fremantle. Hlemut Pich and his 3 officers and i quartermaster transported to Tatura in Victoria where they secured notoriety as only captive Uboat crew outside North America and the United Kingdom.photography, photograph, slides, film -
