Co-operative housing societies were loan societies established in the mid to late 20th century. They were based on the structure of a group of borrowers approximately 40, who lived within a radius of thirty miles joining a co-operative. They had the right to select their own site, plans and amount that they would like to spend. The co-operatives were administered by accounting firms. There were conditions placed on the borrowers in regard to amounts able to be borrowed and size of dwelling and percentage of cost which could be borrowed.The era of post-World War Two saw a shortage in a number of areas one of which was housing. The co-operative Housing scheme was preferred by many as it avoided the block approach which had been used by the Housing commission. The series of 5 photographs feature different views of the Woodlands Housing Development which opened up land bounded by Gap and Anderson Roads, Cornish Street and Elizabeth Drive in the early 1990s. It was a large housing development built close to Sunbury township.A coloured photograph of one of the last housing developments which took place in the old township area. It is a photograph taken at the north end of Anderson Road looking towards Gap Road. One house has been built and there are a number of 'For Sale' signs of blocks fronting Anderson Road. The building was demolished to make way for the Local Government Center, presently housing the Rural City of Wangaratta. The first meeting of Manchester Unity members was held in Wangaratta 1863. Sherwood Ltd. Was a manufacturer of oil lamps and burners at the Nechells Park Works Birmingham UK and regarded at the time as a renowned name in the oil lamp and burner manufacturing industries in Birmingham during the early part of the 20th century. They started selling as ‘Isaac Sherwood & Son Ltd.’ in 1904, later around 1920 they merged with Linley and Co makers of American pattern lamps and became ‘Sherwood-Linley” moving to 44-50, Granville St. Birmingham. They became one of the largest manufacturers of lighting devices and burners in England. They produced all sorts of illumination devices and became famous for their oil burners. Apart from oil burners, they produced table and floor lamps, sconces, lanterns and chandeliers that made Sherwood unique. A Significant item as part of a kerosene lamp that was commonplace in homes and other premises during the early 20th century as a means of lighting before electric lighting became the standard.
