Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.This is one of a small number of subdivision plans for commercial property in the collection. The subdivision proposed to create six shop sites in High Street between the Harp of Erin and Station Street. The plan shows this stretch of High Street, East Kew already lined with shops that include the hotel on the corner, the new State Savings Bank, a dentist’s surgery and Lambert’s Store. The High Street Tram was to reach Burke Road in 1925, so the proposed subdivision must postdate that event, and the opening of the Bank in 1926.subdivision plans - east kew, high street - east kew

The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. Four of the blocks faced Segtoune Avenue. The auctioneers proclaimed the advantages of the sites: ‘Situate one minute from the High Street Electric Tram, which now runs direct to Spencer Street via Bridge Road and Flinders Street. Opposite the East Kew Railway Station (Outer Circle Line), which may be reopened In connection with the new Line from Kew to Doncaster; Adjacent lo the Kew Recreation Reserve, Sports Oval, and Swimming Bath; Half Minute from the Shopping Centre of East Kew, Accessible to the State School and Other Educational Centres’. The Harp of Erin Hotel and the route of the Outer Circle Railway line are marked on the plan. The Recreation Reserve and Sport Oval refer to Victoria Park. The subdivision took its name from the mansion ‘Goldthorns’, shown on the plan between Normanby Road and Lady Loch’s Drive. Contemporary advertisements describe forty-three home sites being fro sale, yet only forty-one appear on this plan. Buyers were lured by the prospect of the proposed extension of the Burke Road tram to High Street. Barnes.The East Kew Tramway Estate was a subdivision of two separate parcels of land between Adeney Avenue and Normanby Road. The larger section included 54 lots facing Adeney Avenue, Argyle Road, and Campbell, Hunter and Wishart Streets. [Hunter and Wishart Streets were created as part of the subdivision.] A further 17 allotments faced Normanby Road, Hubert and Campbell Streets. [The name of Hubert Street was later to be changed to Cecil Street.] The promotion of the sale referred to the advantages of living between two tram routes, in High Street and Cotham Road. Set of three Black and White photos of unknown date and photographer: 1 - Photo shows MMTB AEC Mk III bus, on a Footscray route late 1970's doing the U-turn at the intersection of Queen and Flinders Street Melbourne. These bus chassis were built by AEC in the UK between 1951 and 1953 and bodied by Commonwealth Engineering (Comeng). This particular bus was tendered for sale in July 1980. 2 - Three MMTB Mk 4 buses stored at Clifton Hill depot prior to their sale Numbers 618, 604 and 607. All showing Clifton Hill. 618 has an advert for Bosch. The chassis for these buses were built in 1956 with the bodies by Lawton Pty Ltd of Adelaide. Buses 604 and 607 were offered for sale during July 1980. 3 - three Mk III buses, numbers 583, 584 and one other at a depot during the early 1980's which had been converted to ambulances for use during state disasters. Based on the reference 3rd reference document, there were four buses converted - 581 to 584 and were sold during 1980. Photo of ESCo No. 8 - side on view of tram. Has Driver standing by front of tram, a person, possibly conductor standing by rear, though tram set up for one man operation. Good detailed side view of tram, showing arrangements of blinds, seats etc. Has "Suttons Pianos" advertisement on side and "Pictures Coliseum tonight" ad on the inside middle window. Tram has been converted to have windscreens. Three ladies on the front seat section of the tramcar. Date unknown. Post 1912. Tram still has magnetic brakes. The step section by the seats has not been covered over with sheet metal to prevent people standing on the steps, as shown in later photographs. Cast hexagonal nickel plated brass or sterling silver badge with a single hole in the top, with words "Prahran Tramways Trust Malvern" on one side and on reverse "Officers No. Pass" with the number "6" stamped in. Fitted with a nickel plated ring. Raised edges with flat sides. Manufacturer unknown. In the lower edge of the reverse of the badge are the letters "STC.SN" stamped in. These are not present on the other two examples eg Reg Item 576. Has been mounted or enclosed within a coin collectors/sale cardboard folder with an embossed crown on the front. Set of 6 drink coasters, with a felt back gold plastic front with an impression of a Melbourne tram contained within a black finished cardboard box. Each coaster has the imprint of the MMTB emblem. The coasters feature: Z3 class - 1980 - has a Stephen Daly trademark logo on the rear. W2 class - 1927 A class - 1910 - 11 R Class - 1266 (Melbourne cable tram) - 1885 X class - 1924 T class - 1917 Produced by Paul Stephen-Daly trading at Louchrilau Nominees Pty Ltd, with address details and contact phone number (6 digits) and a telex number. Given it has a Z3 included, date late 1970's early 1980's. An internet search for the name shows a number of coasters produced by the same person on sale as collectables.
