Document. 1858 the central section of the building was completed on 17th May. It was built by contractors Snowball & Co for the sum of 2,996 pounds. Built by the Government of the time as a new Post Office, it replaced the former timber post office located on the site.

Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Meeting venue: Temperance hall, View Street, circa 1900. For many years the temperance section of the community was housed in a small building in View Street, Sandhurst. The Temperance Society was formed in 1857 and the foundation stone for a new building was laid in 1895. The new building was designed and erected under the supervision of Mr. J. Blair at a cost of 1,500 pounds. The large hall was used for meeting purposes and the offices were leased out. Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Corner residence circa 1900: Swedish born Karl Van Damme arrived on the Bendigo diggings in about 1852 and established himself as a tobacconist at 85 Pall Mall, next to the Shamrock Hotel. Although he had been living at the corner of View and Valentine streets in Sandhurst as early as 1883 it was not until 1898 that William Beebe designed a Queen Victoria style building erected by G.A. Davey for Van Damme. By 1905, van Damme, recorded as a tobacco merchant and importer, had established a branch at 143 Pall Mall, near Mitchell street. He sold the business at 85 Pall Mall in 1909, but remained at number 143 until the early 1920s. By this time it was known as Pikes Buildings. Copy of a piece about Richard Hartley Smith Abbott. Abbott was born in Bendigo. He was a hardware merchant, it operated as Abbot Supply Co. He was a director of the Bendigo gas Co, Sandhurst Building Society and Sandhurst Trustees Co. He also helped pioneer tanning in Australia and he had his tannery in Mandurang. He served on the Strathfieldsaye Council and later the Bendigo City Council. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1907 and in 1932 served as a Senator. In 1887 he was on the committee to establish an art gallery. He served on the School of Mines Council. In 1910, he attended a meeting about Miners' Phthisis in Bendigo. He invested in the Bendigo mines and his firm was a major supplier of various hardware for the mining companies. The envelope contains one large photo of Sandhurst Hostel, three proofs and two negatives of the hostel. This is a two storey building with verandas and ornate pediments. At the top of the building are two pediments each with the sign ' Heywood's Sandhurst House ' on them. There are six people standing on the balcony and below one person and a bicycle parked at the front of the building.
